Hi all can anyone please tell me where the crank position sensor is on my Maverick .After searching many sites and talking to many people i am completely in the dark.i keep getting code 47 on mil light.i know its the sensor but cant find it.have been told it doesnt have one then was told it was the sensor by the water pump but when disconected code11 came up as well as 47.so have decided to ask the only people im sure will know.i have had this car a while and it is an unbelivable vehicle.please help

Hi Welcome to the club.
The vehicle you have is the Tdi version not the Td.

The Tdi has the intercooler and the crank position sensor, the Td has neither.
So this may be where the confusion lies.

The sensor has been mentioned several times, but some one will be along shortly.
There is also a manual on line for your vehicle.

well, if you have a whacking big I/C in your engine bay, then the CKP sensor is at the front of the engine between the belts. Its a small, round black magnet with a wire running up near the thermostat to the loom.

if its not a TDi, then it doesnt have a CKP, so can you clarify?

Hi i do have intercooler .have cleared stored fault codes.removed cleaned and replaced said sensor left disconected and tried to start engine it did fire up then died .fault code 11 now stored.is this not the camshaft sensor.

yes, it wont run without it, needs to be plugged in. if its failing, you will have rough running, stalling etc and eventually it wont run at all.

code 11 is Fuel Injection Pump position sensor, thats built into the pump afaik but will probably clear if you can fix the code 47, ckp does affect timing, so code 11 might be a bit of a rogue.

personally, I would buy a new CKP, its expensive, but if you buy second hand, you are just running the risk of it failing again. Its just a magnet, and is affected by heat, so you need a good strong one at least. If you do buy one, then try get one from a lower mileage vehicle as the CKP ARE affected by age/usage.

Don't forget clivvy there are 2 and 3 wire versions, remember how we both went down that route. You need the correct version for your's not just changing the plug.

yup, but i think if its a 96 Maverick, it will be the same as mine. I think the later models had the different wire and position...

Thanks very much for your help.so this doesnt have a crank sensor on the bell housing it takes crank reading from the camshaft gear at the front of the engine.mine is the three wire.goes to a collection of terminal blocks next to intercooler at font of engine this one being on the outer right hand side as you look from the front of the engine.

A Maverick of this year and from what the OP is saying that he has a Cam sensor on the timing case means he will have the Zexel / Hitatchi fuel system.

sounds pretty much the same as mine, mines an early 97.

as Timbo says, will be Zexel pump and Hitachi MAF. So yes, CKP is at front of engine, easily got to. Well worth removing and checking/cleaning. Its a magnet, so it senses the camshaft positions and sends data to ECU, if its off, or the magnet is loosing strength, the signal wont be right, or the ecu will use defaults, and this will result in poor timing, poor fueling, stalling etc etc.

Mine was liek yours at first, nothing major, untill I had major issue with random stalling, only ever when the engine was fully hot, cold, the car is fine, again this is because heat affects the magnet! As soon as I changed mine, it was like a different car. I did try some used ones, had the same issue, which is why i dont think its worth using used sensors, unless you are certain its working fine.
