Come on people, its a bit disheartening to post these lessons for you and receive very little feed back. I've now posted two lessons (three including tonights) and received only two replys. Am I to take it that you are all fully confident on what I've posted already and wanting to move on? Or do you need some thing explained again. Its new to me as well, as I've only ever given instruction face to face, been able to use diagrams and give examples. I'm not yet computer literate to do this here. I would appreciate some feed back even its if negative.

Well I'm reading it even though the Army taught me to read maps 23 years ago, and it's a refresher for me. I never quite got my head round scale, good job I was only laying telephone lines and not calling in artillery fire

i'm still in need of more help from you but my head is up my rear at the moment working on the site,

be good to go soon and get back to the grids

P.S those who are not going to do the work cameraman has set, can you return the maps please a.s.a.p or you know the rules!

It looks like there's been 840 views of the topic, so perhaps you're just an unsung hero 8)

And thanks for your advice posted elsewhere, I think the first bit of advice I'll take is to make sure Terry the Terranosaurus Reck is ready to go off road!

Are there any maps still going, I would very much like to have a look at this, it would be good to see if we could organise more events for the locals in my neck of the woods and once I have learnt more may be I could help  if there are any spare maps I will PM my address.

pm me your address and i will send out wolf's one he returned,

please take care of the map as it belongs to Cameraman not the club, as with any others who lend them, if they are not returned when finished or required, we will suspend membership until done so,

sorry hope you understand, never happend yet

Thanks for the training guy's it should come in useful, map has now been posted back to you

I now have a new map of the New Forrest, a lot of the road listings have changed, what do we look for now to describe a track open to us to drive on?

. . . . . . . . . other routes with public access :?:
OR
+ + + + Byway open to all traffic :?: :?:

Hope that makes sense, it is the best I can reflect the information on the map

Yes, you can use ORPAs, BOATs and also UCRs, (unclassified roads), the quickest way to check the legality of the route, and if its currently open is to use: http://www.way-finder.co.uk/cgi-bin/login.pl?action=logoff

6 figure

1st+2nd & 4th+5th figures define the grid square, 3rd and 6th figures are then tenths of that square.

With an 8 figure reference its pretty much the same only theres a division into hundredths of the square instead. In most cases you can just ignore the 4th and 8th figures and treat as a 6 figure reference.

1st+2nd & 5th+6th figures define the grid square, 3rd+4th & 7th+8th figures are then hundredths of that square.

They seem to have become more prevelent with the onset of digital mapping. People click on google maps etc and use whatever it gives them, unfortunately the references rarely seem to be any more accurate than they would have been if only 6 fig refs. Much more user friendly is the use of quarter fractions to define things instead of 8 fig references but computers don't like fractions or at least programmers don't.

8 and 10 figure grid references are mainly used by the forces when accuracy is everthing. (I think the Yanks are still using 2 figures).

Funnily enough I was going to post in here later today, as I've just re written this whole map reading course to use the Landranger series, sheet 119 Buxton and Matlock.

I will be re posting the six lessons, so anyone can use it along with the correct map, which along with sheet 110 we use on the Derbyshire lane trips.
