After reading the front hub sticky thread I finally had a small eureka moment and realised that ugly looking thing on my 2002 terrano was not an auto hub but something else, a permanent locked hub. I'll be having the outer cv joints replaced on tuesday.
I happen to have manual locking hubs, Warn Premium part nr 28739, which came with my previous '99 Terrano. It was claimed that they fitted, I never tried to,
has the correct nr of 27 splines.
And if they fit as claimed to the 99 Terrano does it follow that they will fit to replace the fixed hub in 2002 Terrano?

AFAiU, I can install the original auto hubs only if I use the orig axle from the 99 Terrano with inner joint?

Yes, Yes, Yes!!!!!!

Did your manuals come with the bolts? They should be Hex head jobbies. You will have fixed installed at the minute but you will have to release the studs, i did a YouTube video somewhere how to do it, I'll report back with link and pics.

It's dead easy :thumb2

I find this fun y, I have a pair of fixed ready and waiting in the garage to replace my autos lol

This is how I rank the different types best to worst

Manual
Auto
Fixed

Simples :thumb2

The top two may switch if I ever see some decent quality ones that don't need attention every 5 mins :naughty

Yeah but no hurry as the autos are working at the moment and I need a set of four 17" rims amd tyres too.

All T2.s can fit Auto, Fixed or Manual hubs the only difference is the circlip position and method of fixing 6 studs or bolts, Rick

Could well have been operator error as I always had problems!!

I've followed Ricks advice on re-assembly, guides, pictures, common sense and they still broke :(

I just gave up with them, I can only have so many bad experiences before I put it down to them being rubbish and not me being a crap mechanic :naughty

Depends what you want, if you want reliability I would go for fixed.
It's a fair shout, no maintenance really whereas the manuals and autos need greasing from time to time

Also if they fail = No 4x4

Unless they don't fail in a way you can't bodge it & open them up and set them to be permanently locked.

Hubs

O.K - Numpty asking a question.

I need to change the brake discs and pads on my 05 Terrano 2.7.

When I took the wheel off I was greeted by something I have not seen before.

Black centre cap and 6 shiny small bolts around it. The Disc has 4 bolts through it as well as the 6 studs that hold the wheel on.

What set up have I got and how do I get the discs off?

Many thanks

Rich

You will have fixed flange hubs.
It all has to come off as the four bolts you mentioned are the ones that hold the brake disc to the hub and if I remember correctly are only accessible once the hub is removed.
