Thanks for the suggestion - do you know where I can get a cheap 14 pin male connector to do this?

It's possible that I hit the connections twice, as it was a real struggle to see what I was doing. If there was a fault that was causing the light to come on *that hasn't actually been fixed*, should I expect the light to come back on again soon?

that is correct, re the plug do not bother just get some twin wire and solder to a push to make switch, and if stranded wire just tin the ends and push them into the socket, then you have control with the push button, Rick
 
Now the fault codes have been cleaned although by mistake (i've done it as well:doh) if there is a fault the light will come on again:augie
I made up a sort of code reader like Rick has mentioned & it works great:thumb2 had all the bits ie switch, wire & a paper clip in my cupboard so cost nothing to do & it now lives in my toolbox:D

Thanks for the tip - sounds like a good idea. Haven't done many miles since so fingers crossed the fault light won't come back on.....
