Made it worse! MAF cleaning

I have felt like it has been a bit sluggish so got some carb cleaner today to give the MAF a clean. Removed the plastic mesh and then smaller mesh and squirted the carb cleaner all over. Metal bits are all shiny now, very dull before. Put it back together and it's gutless... :nenau I mean really gutless

What have I done wrong? It wasn't this bad before.

Did you put the mesh back on?

If so then it's likely it's broken.

Yeah all back together ok. Think your right because plugged/unplugged it makes no difference

Usually unplugging a MAF will make the engine run rough, correct? Mine does nothing.

When I accidentally left my MAF disconnected, the engine started and run fine, until I put my foot on the accelerator, then it did nothing, basically the revs barely raised at all.

I get the same when I switch the "MAF amp" on or off with the engine running., it seems perfect until you put your foot on the accelerator, and then nothing really happens.

I would double check the connector pins in the connector, in case one or more is corroded. Also look at the wires, in case one has hardened and snapped.

what maff you got Hitachi or Bosch, the Bosch is best left well alone, that is why it has anti tamper screws, the Hitachi is easy to damage, Rick

I cleaned my maf the other day !! all seem ok ... But you speak of a mysterious mesh 'plate' ?? Mine did not have one, just open ends.. Does this mean someone's had a fiddle in the past and not put it back? It's got no name on it and the terranos a 2005 3lt cheers rob

This is exactly what is happening!! I cant even make it up our hill

It's the first time that I have unplugged the MAF, So in the morning I'll check the connectors and the wires.

if it is the same as my Bosch one then it has a plate as opposed to ceramic coils and I could not see a way of cleaning it, I am told it is self cleaning buy heat, so think best well left alone if you have damaged or contaminated the plate, then you may have to replace it, think rayf is the best person to ask about this, he is the absolute electronics guru, Rick

a plate you say.. I did see a plate as well as 2 prongs that both got squirted with carb cleaner. Then I put a new clean microfibre cloth on the end of a small screwdriver and wiped what I could get at. But the screwdriver had pushed through the cloth so I may have damaged the plate. Would a scratch on the plate do this?

yep, its it bit like the the medical profession adhere to with regard to your ears, "don't put anything bigger than your elbow in there"
Even a cotton bud can wreck it, never mind a screwdriver!

I've fitted the new MAF and it is better but not quite right. I can get up my hill now and drive fairly normal, but there is a flat spot around 2000rpm. And there is still no noticeable difference between MAF plugged in or unplugged on tickover.
