I'll buy a multimeter and test em both. Rayf has given me the output voltages
at Idle 1.8~2.0 V and
4.5 V @ 3000rpm.

Reading the preceding posts and others of a similar nature makes me rather smug that when I bought my Terrano I knew nothing about them, I only got the one I did because it was cheap. It's a '94, so no maf, no crank position sensor, no intercooler, no digital dash, in fact it's got more in common with a tractor than a 4wd but so much less to go wrong!
If ever I am in the position of having to buy another it would have to be another '94, but probably bought in Spain, as rust seems to be the common denominator across the whole range, and the Spanish ones suffer much less in that respect.

Got one of these: http://www.screwfix.com/p/philex-83002r-s-digital-multimeter-with-temp-probe/88381

Don't really know what I'm doing and my sparky mate is on holiday this week.
I guessed and turned the dial to 20V? (0.00) :nenau
Couldn't get the pointy end into the top of the No.5 (Blue&White) MAF plug so I punctured the wire with it to make contact. Bloody chassis is covered in rust  so couldn't get a decent earth and when it did the numbers were all over the place.
Anyhow I think I got some readings courtesy of a well placed hammer on the throttle :sly:

Idle 1.5 ~1.7 V Max (Rayf says 1.8~2.0)
2K rpm 2.75 V Max
3K rpm 3.5 V Max (Rayf says 4.5V)

While driving it just feels so flat, especially in 3rd @ 2500rpm, it doesn't want to go. And setting off is pants, it bogs down.

Well I can take this MAF back for a full refund with in 28days and it's warrantied for 12mths. If I've got a faulty one I'll try another, and if that's no good well.... Be looking for a cheap Bosch I think.

Now I've got a meter, I'll test the original MAF and see what the output is.
Back in a bit

Ok, Original MAF has no change in the output from Idle to 3000rpm. It hovers constantly around 0.5~0.6 V. I think I killed it. Unless the Carb cleaner has knackered it.... I got this Comma carb clean http://www.uk.commaoil.com/productsguide/view/6/281
I also sprayed the plug with it.

Looks like that one is foofed.. The carb cleaner it's self should be OK, it is basically just a thinners type stuff that helps to soften and dissolve the varnish that build up, the only potential problem would be if it attacked the plastic, but since there are rubber seals in a carb, I would expect it to be OK with that sort of thing.

I think my guess would be, Colonel AD Ents, as the Killer, in the garage, with the screwdriver....:lol

The other MAF reading low, is exactly the reason Ray made the MAF amp, as it brings up the low voltages you are seeing, to the correct voltage the ECU wants to see, normally on an older MAF. I guess depending on how much you are saving on the one you have over the Bosch, might make it worth getting one of Rays MAF amps, but I think I would take that one back, and try a new one first.

lesson learned on this one.
I would like to get the maf to be where it were before I killed it before I get one of rayf amplifiers. I dont want it to boost a poor maf to standard I want more. lol

stick with ray for analysing your maf, it is beyond my scope, Rick

I found a 2nd hand Bosch MAF on ebay for £20 delivered from a parts place. It came the next day, and looked a bit grubby and greasey so gave it a clean with the carb cleaner, making sure not touch anything. Left it to dry, Fitted it and it was not working. Head in hands moment and a big groan.
Put the chinese one back on which interestingly has come to over the last few days, it has definitely been better with pick up and more lively, not perfect, but certainly useable.
Contacted the seller and asked for another to be sent out as this one was dead. He had 3 for sale. It arrived this morning, this time I gave it a clean with Halfords Electrical Contact Cleaner as I read on Google that carb cleaner can destroy MAF's, fitted it and works perfect up and down our lane.
So I reckon the Comma Carb Cleaner has killed 2 MAFs.

Wow... That I would not have expected, when I cleaned mine, I used Brake cleaner... so out of the two, I would have expected the carb cleaner to be safer...

What would have been the best test, would have been to have tried the other MAF first...

Still, from what you say, leave the MAF alone... Step away from the MAF...:lol

Glad you are sorted. It would be interesting to see how the cheap MAF works with Ray's MAF Amp in the future though, as it could be a nice cheap way of replacing the MAF.

i only use maplins electrical contact cleaner on my maf any electrical contact cleaner wil do the job tho to be honest carb cleaner is best left for erm cleaning carbs lol always notice a difference in pick up and performance when iv cleaned it.

now just need to get some methonal to convert the 200 litres of svo to bio before the cold weather gets here bring on the snow

I know I know! can't believe I didn't fit it before cleaning with carb cleaner... then I would have been sure if it was working or not. Thing is I did the same this morning with the electrical contact cleaner, just sprayed away la la la de da

When I eventually get Ray's Amp I will test it on the chinky maf and report back.

I rung Nissan the other day for a price for a new Bosch MAF:eek: . He took my reg and said he'd call me back. have a guess how much?

gotta go out. I'll be back in an hour or so and tell you how much.:lol

I have no idea, but considering how little is in it, and allowing for a bit of development costs, should be £50 max.. reality, I bet £200 ish...

It was £58+VAT -- £69.60
I just spent £27 on a chinky + fuel to Leeds and now £20 on a 2nd hand one. A lot of messing and stressing.

Last one I bought was £50 from main dealer 5 years ago but vat has gone up might price one up as a spare is always handy:augie
