Having only recently bought my 1999 Terrano II S 2.7 diesel, I want to do a full service so that I know that everything is up to date.

I assumed that all of these trucks had limited slip differentials in the rear axle, but wanted to make sure so that I get the right oil. I jacked the back up today so that both back wheels were in the air and with the handbrake off turned the offside rear wheel. The nearside one turned in the opposite direction indicating a standard diff.

Was my assumption incorrect and there are some terranos non LSD equipped? Is this catagorical proof that I don't have a LSD?

Thanks in anticipation of your help!

Cheers,
Ian.

what you have there is the wrong type of oil (or buggered oil) in the diff.

change the oil. run for a while
then change the oil again..

is it a little " tail" happy in the wet too??

it does seem to be an open diff, normally if you turn one wheel clockwise the other should turn anti-clockwise, or perhaps the diff is knackered. :nenau:thumbs

Thanks for the advice so far.

I wouldn't say that it's overly tail happy in the wet, but we've just had some snow so I'll have a bit of a play on some bends/roundabouts on the way to work!

So when an LSD diff gets knackered it can revert to a standard diff?

Am I right in thinking that I can damage a LSD diff with non LSD oil but can't do any harm putting LSD oil in a non LSD axle? If so I'll definately put some LSD diff oil on the service shopping list and hope it fixes itself!!

Thanks again,
Ian.

Yes and yes.

What model and year Terrano is this? If a later one, what axle have you got? are the diff bolts on the front or rear of the axle casing?

hi.you educated lot:) am i to belive that their could be 2 different types of diff fitted to the t2? as i was thinking of changing the oil in mine and changing the gearbox oil when it gets warmer about june then i should think!! my truck is year2000 as what size spanner fits the nuts:eek: dont say a big 1:lol

There are 2 totally different rear axles fitted - on a 2000 yours sould e the normal H233b type though.

Oil drain and fillers use a 13mm square, or a 1/2" drive ratchet fits quite well too.

thanks for you propt reply:bow normal how do i tell!!! so which oil should i use in mine? would my 1 be a lsd diff or not? sorry for being soooooooooooooo thick:( im used to jeeps!!!

H233b has a third member type diff where a carrier assembly unbolts from the front of the axle casing.

C200 is a bit lke Dana axles (on jeeps) i believe. There is a cover plate on the rear of the diff that can be removed to access the innards.

Most have a sticker on that says use LSD oil - if it has you have definitive proof. Many fall off, but I can guarentee yours wil have an LSD so use an LSD compatible oil for the rear diff.

PS Take the fill plug out before the drain plug just to make sure you can :thumb2

you know your stuff:bow yes it dana axles on the jeep and they do have cover plate jeep also put another axel on some jeeps depended on what they had on the shelf!!!! you could tell the difference between them by shape of the diff:) just thought id add that bit of info!!!! had a look in owners manual when i managed to find it!! and it says both diffs would be lsd? can i use same oil in front diff?

Thanks again for your advice - I will have a look at the bolts in the morning and report back!
