There are a few Oldies like me here so I thought I would share our experience of replacing our old bath / shower unit that was cracking in the middle with a more modern one designed to be easier to get in and out of.

The wife has had a bad hip for quite a few years now, with a bit of luck she will be having a hip joint resurface / replacement later this year.

When we were looking at Bath options including just having a shower we stumbled across a Low Threshold Bath that seemed to tick a lot of boxes. In the Plumbers Merchants she tried the lower unit and it was much easier to lift her leg over the bath edge as it was substantially lower than our old one - we are talking about a difference of almost 9 inches compared with our existing bath that was quite a tall / deep Italian design from 2002.

As far as getting in and out to use the shower it is very good but we like to have a proper soak in the bath particularly at weekends. All seemed okay except I would have to be on guard duty as she got out of the bath - not a problem. Then about three months ago just like I found my BMW 3 series difficult to get out of so it was with the bath. It has handles on either side but they are not very practical to use unless you have UJ swivel joints on your wrists.

Today have fitted a side hand rail in the hope it will be easier. Now wish we had a standard bath in all honesty.

I'm humbled by your story and grateful for my youth and suppleness :bow

My nan has had a few nasty slips in the Bathroom and has been alone, she has very bad arthritis and struggles with her hips and knees. We've had to fit a few handles her and there to make sure that she can get herself out of trouble if she needs to.

We also had to get her a panic alarm fitted and she carries a fob round with her now so if she goes over she can alert someone rather than being left on the floor all day :doh :(

we're just planning a new bathroom. the old one is from when house was built
in 50s, cast iron and deep.

we want a walk in shower as not that bothered about the bath though kids like
to bath n play still.

trying to design so can have both. seen baths with a door in but wow the prices
£2k typically.....

Thats cheap!!!!
we got quoted just shy of 10K to convert our existing bathroom into a wet room with walk in shower and a few mobility aids for the mrs.:eek::eek::eek:

Bath with Motorised lifting base to prevent accidental drowning.

Our daughter had a special bath installed that essentially has a built in lift / rising base to enable her to bath the twins one of whom is severely disabled.

As well as an electric hoist the bath has a rising base that is like a colander allowing the water through so you can have it so it is really shallow or you can fully immerse at the touch of a button. With full wet room and a special toilet that washes & dries the nether regions it cost in the region of £12-15k.
