Right update so far, started truck and selected reverse went into gear ok as I put up the revs there was a small clunk and drive came back but was very lumpy

line pressure solenoid.

This is the part the forces the clutch packs together to transfer drive from the planetary gears to the sun gear that drives the output shaft to the transfer case.

it maybe sticky, there maybe some gunk stuck in it.
Strongly recommend getting it flushed professionally as lack of line pressure results in slipping clutch packs, that will slip excessively creating the burnt brown looking atf fluid.

its been said many times , not just by me .... but DONT OVERFILL

Briggie has a lot of experience with Auto boxes, his motor was the source of many threads a couple of years back.

Update. ATF now in good order, goes in to all gears and drives as it should but getting a wining noise for about 5 seconds when changing and putting in to park, as if if not in gear fully

agreed .... there are a lot of solenoids around the auto box , anything is possible , its also possible that the torque converter hasn't enough atf in , another possibility is the transfer box is low on oil , or lever not engaged properly

What oil should I put in the transfer box

up to 99 ish with auto hubs recommended was ATF, but think yours has fixed hubs, if so you can use ATF or GL4, but low oil in the transfer box will not cause lack of drive issues, Rick

Given your symptom now I would have another read of this, a flush now could save you many £££ later :thumbs

If you drain out you DO NOT get all the oil out!!!!

Remember this!

I think you leave something like 3 litres behind which can not be taken out.

There is a filter in the bottom of the box. Not an easy thing to get to but can be done.

If you do take the sump for the box off look out for bits in the bottom that look like they should not be there.

When refilling with oil get a pump up sprayer remover the spray nozzel and put the hose in to the dip tube. Pump up the sprayer and you will get oil back in to the box.

Got all my gears back apart from 4 low so will I need to replace my box ?
And is it ok to drive ?
And any one got a box for a 2001 t2

did you put it in N first, then select 4L?
cant get my auto into 4L unless its in N on main selector.
Will got into 4H on the move but not 4L.
worth a try before you scrap it.:thumb2

High and low is transfer box, nothing to do with the auto box, but as elty says you may need to put it in N in order to select low, makes sence as auto creaps unlike a manual, Rick

To get 4 low, push down then back:thumb2

plus auto selector has to be in N as Elty001 has said with it being an auto infact I think this is the case with most auto 4x4's I know it was with my disco:augie

It makes a horrible noise if you forget leave it in d and try to change into low, oops, only done that once.

Will it go in without engine running.
Sounds like it's not disengaging drive properly.

As said earlier, high/low has nothing at all to do with your auto box, they are two separate entities, if you have all your gears in high and can select 4 wheel in high then why worry about low, you do not need it, unless you plan on towing a jumbo jet, Rick
