Automatic or manual?:nenau

It's unlikely, but is the 4x4 high low gear selector all the way forward?

The 4x4 gear lever has a neutral position.

Re oil, it should be cherry red, if brown it has overheated.
I am not an Auto expert so only going from memory of previous posts.

Some might suggest an oil change, but you can only get 50% out, so might need two changes after a drove...which will equate to 75% out.

The auto box in question will be a Jatco RE4R01A.

I'm sure it wont be but must ask, the 4wd stick is not in neutral is it? :naughty

Just spotted rustics neutral comment :p

What has reverse been like leading up to this.
Clunky to go in.:nenau
When you checked the atf fluid was it hot.
Needs to be up to temp before you check it to get a true level.
Might just be a broken linkage on the selector.

this rings a bell  , hope it isn't what mine was :(

leave it to cool ....... overnight at least ...... does it drive then ? ...... when filling the atf you will need to fill it using the dipstick tube ( funnel is a good idea ) ....... after filling you need to move the selector through ALL THE GEARS ... park / drive / 1,2 etc a few times ..... then check again DONT OVERFILL

Just checked my owners hand book & it's AFT fluid that's needed:thumbs

What biggie says but while ATF fluid is hot.

Right update so far, started truck and selected reverse went into gear ok as I put up the revs there was a small clunk and drive came back but was very lumpy

ATF levels etc

What colour was the existing ATF ?

If its a light grey colour then you have water in the ATF possibly from leaking radiator/ATFoil cooler.
You need to check the ATF with engine running in Park best done when hot but there are hot and cold markings on the dipstick. On my old r3mR I had a small ATF leak on the small flexi pipes connecting steel pipes to the oil cooler - cheap fix.

DO NOT OVERFILL !!

what year is your auto as i have some auto boxes if needed as long as they are the same:thumb2

drain all atf ..... look closely at colour ....... should be a nice cherry red .......and not smell burnt ...... refill atf , put move selector through all gears and check level again.......DO NOT OVERFILL ( check marks on dipstick ) NOTE ; there is hot and cold marks ......check level again a day or so later and top up as necessary ........ also check bottom of radiator ( this is where the atf cooler is ) for leaks

don't drive it until you have drained and refilled the atf

It's a 2001, the ATF is a nice cherry red so waiting for shops to open then will top up fluid and try again no signs of any leaks

read the workshop download ..... take very close notice of the hot/cold marks on the dipstick ...... might be a good idea to get a filler funnel too while you are getting the atf :thumb2
