:( I have just acquired this '99 2.7TD. Tested it around country roads, seemed fine. Drove home, (180 miles) on motorway. No apparrent problems. Next day had to use it in hilly country. No power up hills. Really struggled. Checked it with my mechanic man, and agreed that problem would appear to be turbo. Have now acquired new turbo, half way through stripping out unit only to find it is a relacement unit (car has done 75.800 genuine miles) and a new intercooler!!!! Is the problem still turbo? There is engine oil in the end of the turbo, (play on the shaft) in the end of the air intake pipe, in both ends of the intercooler, so still points to turbo, but nagging doubts linger. Plus bolts seized on manifold so a bigger job than before to remove. Anyone got any ideas?

Hi Deepee and welcome to the club, did you go down the road of checking the mini filter, fuelfilter, airfilter,MAF unit.?
And is your exhaust all ok??
Think Sweety had the problem of oil in an intake somewhere!!

Mine was just the same as yours deepee by the sounds of it in that I had to use 1st gear to get up a hill that Dinky & Cosmic did in 2nd & 3rd gear  turned out to be my Maf unit had gone  but whilst looking for the prob I found I had oil in the inlet pipe to the turbo which was coming from the crankcase vent system so I fitted an oil catch tank & blocked off the inlet pipe & then cleaned up all pipes & intercooler

Hi Guys,
Have done all of these checks. Still no joy. Obviously some one had a problem in the last 14000 miles, (no service history recored there) to account for all of the new bits. However, have downloaded the Workshop info and will check that again in the morning.
Cheers, deepee

Hi Guys,
Second reply. Problem most probably solved. Cost Wow!!!! Originally when we checked air flow sensor we did not go too deeply into it as it seemed ok. Whilst I have been out on the school run "my man" has managed to get the the turbo off the exhaust and found it battered and the oil seals shot. Dave then went back thru the intake system and found that the casing of the air flow sensor did not contain the internals!!!!!! What seems to have happened is the guts of the a.f.s. have somehow come adrift and been sucked thru the turbo and into the great blue yonder!! How do you stop that one happening!
By tomorrow lunchtime I could be a happy budgie, but a very poor one, if this works ok.
Thanks for all of your help and suggestions, and lets hope the problem is cured.

Glad you've got to the bottom of the problem

In your 1st post you said all was well when you drove it home, are you sure :?:

If the MAF is u/s you know about it, severe lack of power and 60mph flat out, well mines was.

Is your a bosch or hitachi MAF, clearly maked on the MAF.

Let us know how you get on.

Hi there Jocky,
Too late to check!!!! Changed it 9.00 this morning, threw it it the bin whilst the binmen worked their way down the units!!!!
Why I said it seemed ok, was that I had to drive thru heavy trafic Friday evening 5.00 pm) to the motorway, and then once on the motorway after the traffic eased I gradually crept up to 65/70 and held it there for 160 miles. It was not until I took it out on the Sunday that I realised something was wrong when I hit the hills.
After 5 years driving a 2.8 Pajaero most things seem pretty quick!. Now it is fixed and I have drived it 10 miles home I can feel the difference.

On my T2 it seemed to creep up on me, local driving and I didn't notice the change. 8O Went to Scotland and it was terrible, no power at all. Got one in local nissan garage and changed it in the car park and what a difference

Glad you got it sorted.
