There were pictures a while ago where an engine hoist was used via the passenger door to take the weight of the boxes

I remember seeing that, and have searched the net a few times to find it.

You beast!!!!! :clap :clap :clap

Get it on mate we'll be here every step of the way for advice :naughty

Thanks, it's much appreciated. That's said I've got a feeling there will be blood and much colourful language :)

Shipping it to Bexhill best price I have had is £245, plus clutch (if it is the clutch) around £110, plus my cost £100 = £455, better than £633 and if it turns out to be the transfer box, I have a spare sitting on the workshop floor, also, I think you said that it was on a sloping drive, I would not attempt box out or engine out on anything other than flat ground, Rick

another method of diagnostics, start engine no foot on clutch, can you select any gear? or do they not want to go in easy? what about revers does it crunch or not? Rick

Another Google and you can find tilt and slide lorries you can hire and drive yourself. Would cut out paying for the driver's time but no idea on hire cost or a suitable hire company near Bristol.

Thanks for looking into that Rick. It's much appreciated, as is yours and everyone else's comments and advice do far. That said I hope you won't be offended that I have decided to have a go at the job myself, and I further hope that you and others will continue to feel able to help.

Today was 'Day One' and I have got the front of the vehicle up on stands, and made (I think) reasonably good progress...

- Centre console out
- Gear levers off
- Propshafts off
- Starter bolts out (what a faff that was)
- CPS and various electrics disconnected

Total time = 5 hours steady work. Very tiring though getting in and out from under the car, especially if you take the wrong size socket or spanner!

Tomorrow I hope to remove the torsion bars and crossmembers, including sorting out a jack and cradle to support the weight of the gearboxes.

I have a few questions, if someone could help...

1. Does the breather pipe run along the top of the gearboxes, then being routed up into the engine bay. It seem to be made of flexible rubber pipe so far, but the connects to some steel pipe around the engine bay arrears. Is there likely to be any fluid in this?

2. When I pulled the rear propshaft out, a bit of oil was lost. Is this normal?

3. I understand that there ar 5 bolts around the bell housing. Sorry if this sounds stupid, but are they on the front (engine side) or rear of it?

Thanks & Regards

Alan

Couple of pictures below...

Alan, I have respect for you mate doing this yourself. The very best of luck. You've made a great start so far.

I remember bigbunny removing my rear propshaft and there was a small fluid loss from the rear diff.

Would you mind posting pics of the gear lever lower gaters please.

Cheers

Bloody 'ell mate you don't mess about :thumb2 I've never done owt like that but inwould take pics of anything complicated to make reassembly easier.

Thanks. Let's hope the endeavour pays off in the end... :)

Can you explain in a bit more depth what gaters you mean. Taking a picture won't be a problem.

Alan

So far it's been mostly just nuts and bolts, but I have taken a few pictures as well.

Dropping the gearbox out is the bit that got me losing sleep!

Good effort:thumb2
Hopefully will go to plan and looking forward to seeing more photos:clap

I had faith in you before you even started Alan :thumb2

Great start, slight fluid loss is supposidly normal but I've yet to lose any when removing a rear prop :nenau

No fluid in the breather mate :thumb2

Can't remember the exact location of the bolts as it's been a while since I removed the box off one, I just remember having thought I'd removed them all and the box not moving an inch, turned out there was a hidden one with very poor access but once undone was a sinch :naughty

Bell housing bolts go from bell housing into engine, what you are doing is great, but, and it is a big BUT, have you established if it is the clutch or the transfer box????????? before you start on the clutch, I would hate for you to remove the box, do the clutch only to find it was the transfer box all the time, Rick

You seem to have it sussed pal, patience and a bit of old carpet always helps :thumbs

There might have been a thick rubber gaiter under the nice leather (ish) one round the gear stick, I think its that which jim wants a pic of.
This is going to be a good thread Alan :thumb2:thumb2
