Thanks to all for the ongoing comments and input. I am going to Halfords tonight to buy a tow rope, and get it towed up onto my mother in laws driveway, which is sloping. Hopefully, a Subura Outback will be robust enough for the job.

In the meantime, I have a call in with a 4 X 4 specialist, but I think it's going to be expensive.

Once I have it on a drive and away from the kerbside, I can start getting it lifted off the ground and getting underneath to survey the job. The suggestion for testing the gearbox, as per Rick's post and safety precautions advised by Rustic seem sensible, and I guess these have to be separated anyway to do the job.

I am really fond of this vehicle, and as stated in the thread, scrapping it would be a shame. I just changed the water pump belts & thermostat, got the A/C working and serviced it, which I do every three to four thousand miles! New battery in January and it runs and starts really well. It's also reassuring when you get to know your vehicle and how it has been put together and the general condition of it.

With the right degree of humility, when speaking to mechanics, I seem to know more about the model than they do (obviously they can't know everything about every car).

As already said by others it looks too good to be scrapping it. What area are you in, I'm sure someone will help you out if you are struggling, I'm in the midlands :nenau

If it does turn out to be the clutch and you have a half decent tool set I'd attempt it yourself, if it does turn out to be catastrophic and you need any parts I'm sure we'll be able to hook you up here mate.

If it is just the clutch, why don't you do the 3 litre upgrade that Pete did?

If you're being towed, then start the engine, then you have power steering and assisted braking.:thumb2

Now, caution, getting a tow will drive your gear box, you might have to select neutral on the 4x4 box to stop any noise, now here lies some diagnostics.

If noisy whilst being towed, select neutral on 4x4 box, if noise gone, problem is more likely main gear box or clutch.
If you selected neutral on 4x4 box, if still noisy, then could well be transfer box.
Not conclusive, but trying neutral in both boxes could help to diagnose the fault.

Either way, be prepared to remove rear prop shaft, if towing is noisy and you have tried the above.

Ropes are totally legal as long as they are less than 4.5metres.

Towing Dolly's are illegal though, as they turn the car into a trailer, and all wheels on a trailer over 750Kg have to be braked, a towing dolly only effectively brakes on the front wheels... same goes for "A" frames if they only connect to the cars handbrake, and not the main braking circuit.

Yeh i thought the rope story was a bit dodgy, didn't know about the 4.5m though. Interesting about dollys and A frames, I bet the cars you see on back of large campers cost quite a bit to set up. They have things backwards though, i don't get it, taking two engines on holiday??, just get a terry and a caravan simples :D
 
The Tow Pole is just a pole it does not have wheels.
I have seen RAC towing with them

I have one much better than a rope, no snatching, frightening for person steering the towed car, the pole is around a metre long so all they can see is the back of the tow car

I have one, I've used it twice and I think it's ace, makes things a lot easier for a novice being towed :thumb2
 
Got to say the prices you've been quoted by garages so far are ridiculous! :eek:

I got a solid flywheel and HD clutch fitted into the Trol by my local (normal) garage for just over £300...
 
For transporting to Bexhill have you tried www.anyvan.com? Be interesting to know what quotes you'd get back (if any).

P.S. Never used the site myself so not a recommendation. Just googled 'car transporting'.
 
I tried it with all the details and no rush, came back £245 for open transporter Bristol to Bexhill, but said other prices will be Emailed soon, Rick

I bought a metal tow pole, it actually fits under the middle seats of my LWB Maverick.
I bought it when my son and daughter were living with us and they were driving a fiesta.
I have never used it, but what I will say is, make sure you have a suitable point on both cars that it links to, before you use it to tow.
There was nowhere suitable on the Mav, so I screwed in an eyebolt into one of the spare holes in the tow bar, it also serves as a break away cable point for a trailer.
Note... it is NOT suitable as a rear recovery point for the Maverick.

I had to use a D shackle to attach to my truck.
 
I had to cut about a centimetre off one hook to go around the neck of my tow ball.
Check out the tow car before setting off, I could send pictures
 
For a few ££ more buy a rigid tow pole much easier than a rope

Whilst in Halfords they had both the tow pole and tow rope. I hope I have made the right choice buying a tow rope as I thought the pole looked a bit trumpery. The 4tonne rope was £24.99 the pole was £29.99!

Anyway by way of an update I have now received another quote for the work... 4x4 Specialist £633.00 including parts and VAT. That doesn't seem too bad, but I have pretty much made a decision, (bolstered by the posts on the forum), to gird my loins, show some bulldog spirit etc and have a go myself... maybe? If I do, then I have allowed a rather generous two-week window of weekends and evenings to do the job.

I will be able to have a look underneath tomorrow/ the weekend., which will crystallise my decision somewhat.

There were pictures a while ago where an engine hoist was used via the passenger door to take the weight of the boxes
