Looks like my head gaskets gone

Well now as the performance is fixed :smile: the T2 has kicked up as fuss again :twisted: :twisted: :twisted: as I was changing the Maf unit I noticed that it looked a bit damp by the alternator on the engine block :roll: I know mine uses a drop of oil & has since I got it 1&1/2 ago but the coolant level has started to go down a touch over the last few weeks.I went to a garage that I can trust for a price to have the head gasket done & they want £700 to do it :roll: He has said the head will be sent off to be skimed as he does this with all head jobs, dose this sound about the right price :?:

sweety did the garage test it with the sniffer the reason why i am asking i thought my head was going because water was going but found out it was my thermostat had packed in and the water was evaporating worth a thought

I'm wondering if it could be the wax type stuff which is on the block melting so i'm going to try & scrape it off 1st & see if any marks develop :roll: TBH I never thought about the thermostat as i'm sure the engine is running just a touch warmer these day after replacing the water pump but I did flush the rad out & clean the fins on the rad at the same time :roll:
On the plus side i'm enjoying my new rocket :smile: oh dose anyone know how long it takes to stop smilling after replacing the Maf as I seam unable to stop :lol: :lol: :lol:

Price is probably about right but I would make sure for absolutely certain that the gasket has gone before going down that route. There are plenty of other places you could be loosing water and if the only symptom is water loss I'd be tempted to run it for now and see what develops, keep an eye on your oil too for signs of water contamination. Have you tried smelling the coolant water? Sometimes you can pick up traces of exhaust with just your nose, other times it needs doing with the tester.

Had similar symptons with my old girl, after much gnashing of teeth and changing of the thermostat, fan assembly it turned out to be a shot radiator, which by the way looked to be in perfect condition from the outside.

I've had a good sniff in the bottle & can only smell antifreeze, I also checked with a torch for any oil which there was'nt :smile: Checked the oil on the dipstick & it looked fine, also checked the filler cap & it was clear with no white stuff anywhere.
I think I will change the thermostat tomorrow on the off chance that it could be what Scooter has had & the fact it's prob the same one it left the factory with :roll: I think I will fit the lower temp one as we are going into the summer as I would rather over cool than under cool the engine.

My T2 was loosing some coolant, and I tracked it down to the front of the engine- was concerned re head gasket, took it to local garage and he pressure tested it, before replacing the thermostat housing & the housing gasket.

My garage reckoned external coolant leaks with a duff head gasket are not that common, so you might need to look a bit further for your problem Neil.

I had a faulty radiator cap on my last T2 that lost a drop of water when driving and never left any sign of dampness when I checked under the bonnet, only a tell tail white dry antifreeze mark around the cap on the radiator, replacing the cap cured the water loss.

you may find the water dripping from the hole in the bottom of the water pump. sure sign pump is on way out, radiator can also be blocked, causing excess pressure in rad and then blowing out through pressure release cap..

been there done that got t shirt... new water pump £180.00 fitted, rad recon £147.00

but well worth it...... until i sold car

I've checked & checked the water pump as I only replaced it the other month & it looks bone dry :smile: When I did the pump I flushed the rad out & the water flow through it seamed fine :smile: I'm going to fit a new thermostat in the next few days & will have a look at the housing just incase somehow there could be a leak at the back of it :roll:

For me sweet it was the next day when the flipin starter motor packed in!!!! :evil: :evil: :evil:

Its now sat on the drive on 3 legs and a pile of bricks waiting for its new motor to arrive!! So i had a full day of full maffability which gave me 8O :smile: :lol: and 5+ days on the bricks and that made me :? :x :evil:

On some models the thermostat housing is plastic and can warp, so if there is a leak it might be worth not just replacing the gasket but the housing as well.

Hi JonathanM :smile: no mines alloy but I was wondering if there could poss be a leak where the alloy housing is bolted to the engine block :? so when I replace the thermostat i'm going to glean around this area & put some talk on the join to see if any dampness develops :roll: well thats if the fan dose'nt blow it all away :roll:

crikey i paid £50 odd quid for mine and fitted it myself,talk about a rip off for about 1 1/2 hours work

Also check out all hose clips, eventually they dig into the rubber hose and loose their grip. Again a tell tail sign is crystals around the hoses.
Also check interior heater matrix hasn't gone, wet carpets will result.

Yes well i do live in runcorn.... and everything here is a rip off... garage up road wanted £1000.00 to replace my brakes, drums discs and pads , shoes.... i done it myself for £512.00. cost me more to keep terrano than it did my old series III landy....


ended up spending around £3000.00 on terrano. my series cost me less than £2000.00 and in that i fitted a 2.5 turbo diesel engine and 5 speed rangey box.. god only knows why i sold it.....

Been there & done that with all the hose clips as mine where leaking like mad a while bad :lol: As for the heater matrix it was the 1st thing I checked & the footwells are nice & dry :smile:

Well today I change the thermostat on the T2, the one that was fitted was a 88' one :roll: so am going to check it out to see if it is working properly & may put it back in over the winter. Anyway I fiited a new 82' one & the water temp gauge has dropped from the 1/2 mark or just over down to between 1/4 & 1/2 & it creeps up just under the 1/2 way mark when I give the truck a lot of stick through the gears but seems to bad down again no problem & uptill now the viscus fan hasn't kicked in like it used to but i'm sure time will tell with that one :roll: TBH i'm sort of glad the truck is now running at a lower temp with the summer comming & the heatwave they say we're going to get :roll: :lol: :lol:
