long journey advice

hiya guys,

ive been assured by many people that my 2.4 brute will piss all over a constant 6 hour journey to wales in a couple of weeks. apart from me getting knackered, is there any reason i should give the car a break aswell? im going to be doing 1000 miles in 3 days and just wondered if anyone had any advice on doing a long journey like that and whether from experience the mav could handle a 6 hour pretty much constant journey.

Mate your truck will take it

I have regularly cover 600 to 800 miles in a day.

Check the oil and change if required check the water and all other fluids such as brake and steering fluids. Washer bottle also.

give each corner of the suspension a bounce and kick the tyres, check the tread and also for nicks and cuts.

As Paul says, its nothing for these trucks, although I can't speak for certain about the petrol....I frequently do the trip to SW France (just under 1000 miles) in around 14 hours excluding the Dover-Calais ferry.....don't sweat, just check your levels and make sure your wheel balance and tracking are OK (its a PITA pulling the steering wheel to one side all the time or suffering a vibration) and you're good to go! Where are you headed exactly?:thumbs

Oh and don't forget the kettle, camping stove and deckchairs...

I drove my 1994 T2 TD to southern Spain last december, 750 miles in over 2 days (had an overnight stop near Toledo), went through a blizzard over the Pyrenees, rain, wind and sun - didn't miss a beat, and 35mpg - have no fear, these beasts lap up journeys like this (and it's more comfortable on long journeys than my 2006 Zafira!)

My R3mR goes to France for the booze run three or four times every year we have had it (3 years). (Tutbury,then Derby to Calais)

I always check all the important oil levels before she goes and I am sensible in terms of speed so limit it to 65 mph as per my Satnav reading.

If its really hot I take a break after three hours to let it cool down for 40 minutes or so but to be honest that's probably me being over cautious.

I don't have European breakdown cover but then the drive off the shuttle to Calais is hardly a long way into France. I have a cheap breakdown insurance policy (Auto Aid £35.50 per year) that covers me & the missus in any vehicle, its a claim back policy so you have to initially stand the cost of a breakdown / recovery. Never had to make a claim yet found the firm via Money Saving Expert website!

my tip.

push more on the loud pedal. i do that mileage every week. but with more noise pedal you will get there quicker

oh and if tired... bloody be honest to yourself and stop. even if you have to leave the motorway for a short break.
actually get out of the car and go for a P even if you dont need to go.
it will wake you up more than just sitting in the car

avoid chocolate and sweets for sugar burst / energy it works in the short term, but when the rush is gone its a big downer and hits you hard ..... plenty of fruit banana is good so is orange juice

good tips there guys and thanks. tracking is being done before i go away and there is no issues with the wheel balance.

it made it to wiltshire with a f%$£ed water pump so i think i need to have more faith in the ol girl.

I had a 2.4 mav and it went to cumbria and back non stop almost (droped a friend off) 5 hour drive and the old bus had 170,000 miles on its back.
