I finally spoke to Issac at 4WD Systems this morning.

Having described my problem to him he says that if it unlocks OK when it's not in gear and drives OK when the hubs are locked but the box in 2wd then all is OK. :D:D:D
He said that sometimes it can be very hard to get it to unlock 'dry'.

I've driven it about 100 miles now with hubs locked and 2wd. There maybe a slightly greater tendency to self centre but after a few miles I stopped noticing.

Sometimes I can hear it click if going slowly in a tight turn with the windows open but otherwise nothing.

So I plan to go and have a play somewhere challenging soon, any suggestions? have 4wd will travel :thumb2

The thrust washers are readily available, I got a pair in 2 or 3 days. Standard they range from .0295 to .0377 thou so , unless very lucky, they will need to be machined. Rick went to 0.025 and I ended up at 0.021 although in light of the outcome I suspect that 0.025 would have worked for me as well. I can supply part numbers.
Still it was good practice and I can now get my diff out in about 45 minutes and back in in about an hour.

Sounds like a good result then Peter, I have tested mine in the mud and all good, I did have reservations about it staying locked on the over run but need not have worried it is great, I just rang my Nissan dealer re the "washers" he got for me that turned out to be bearing case adjusting shims, and he tells me they are not available, I suspect he just cannot be bothered (polite comment) so part numbers would be good for if I get one for the rear although it is possible the rear is different, Rick

I ordered an another pair of original thickness thrusts just in case I needed to return to standard and they arrived at the dealer in less than 24 hours so any "not available" talk is rubbish. The same part is used up until at least 2007 on Navanas.

Part no. fir the front thrusts washers.
3842W2010 = 0.75 mm
and so on to
3842W2017 = 0.96 mm
in 0.03 mm steps

Hope that helps.

The site where I got the numbers seems to have crashed at the moment so I can't check for possible numbers for the rear but I will keep trying.

Well it works both ways, I browse for tips and tricks all the time.

Rick
Parts site is back and I've had a look but I can't see anything that resembles a shim or thrust washer in the relevant areas of rear final drive. The LSD and the diff seem to be made up into one 'cassette' type assembly with spring plates which form part of the LSD so there may not be a need for any thrust or shim washers.
I've never had one apart so can only go by the exploded diagram and the workshop manual I'm afraid. Maybe others know better.

Peter

Thanks for that Peter, I have more than one LSD here, now redundant so when lol I get some free time will strip one out and see what it is made of, Rick

Bit off topic but I've just noticed your location Rick, I went to school in Bexhill during the 50s. It was the junior school for The Royal Merchant Navy School. It closed in 1958 and I went on to the senior school Wokingham now called Bearwood College.
Not very happy days for me, very much old school boarding school, if you see what zI mean.

Bit before my time in Bexhill, only known it for just over 40 years, met a Bexhill girl and married her in 1970, very happy for 40 odd years, Rick

thanks for finding it Rustic, pretty quick too, would have taken me hours, cos I tend to get side tracked when searching, like come across something else that I need to read, then forget what I was doing in the first place, Rick

that's fantastic. ive added it to my favorites for references:thumb2

I will read through these at my leisure.
I cant read through 150 posts in one sitting and it may have been brought up.

but ive been chatting with a mate asking if he knows how to do this with me.
and he thought I was going to fit it to the rear diff?

does that mean have to fit 2?
front and back?
( well don't have to but:augie)

Im thinking this is maybe one of the best mods I can do and it will not lose much value if my car dies.
A front and rear diff with lokkas already fitted:clap they would be worth a lot with the work already done.
so my speech to the misses would go something like.

babe I love you. (what do you want?) well im thinking of making the car safer for when you take skye school and the roads are icy:kissy

( how much does it cost?)
in the long term nothing!.
but for now I need a few bits...
but they will be worth more than the cost price even in a year or two.:clap

if I could but front and rear diffs already lokkerd they must be worth 600 quid at least to save all the work.bolt on bolt off:naughty

From memory they only do one for the Terrano front diff bud, Trols the same :( although at least I've still got a full diff lock in the rear.

It cannot be fitted to the rear dif, just think about it, all the time it is driven it will be locked up, do you really want to pay £300 odd for a permanently locked diff? much easier to weld it up if that is what you want, but not on a road going motor surely? Rick

They do make them for some rear diffs Rick - I just assumed it would act like the detroit lockers they fitted in the muscle cars :nenau
