It's sat. night, it's beer o'clock and I want a live axle up front :sly
Any ideas guys?
Which axle to use?
Seen vids on you tube but no real info:augie
Is it really worth it?

i have live axels on my caravan and it is sh*t off road :thumb2
 
you can get a cheep trol pete bloody loads of them. pop your t2 body on it

Belive its a Jeep axle you have to use to get the diff drop on the correct side - or someones doing an after market case in the US to take Toyota internals.

The one in the vid don't seem that well done - not much flex at all, almost no bump travel if you look and the body tends to follow the line of the axle (like with IFS) which shows a lack of travel and too stiff springs.

I think the main issue now in the UK for a road legal SAS is that you may well need an IVA test as you'll have to modify the chassis in order to make suspension mounts.

Does that count if the chassis remains intact but some extra bracketry is fitted to it?
Is the existing lower wishbone capable of taking coilovers instead of the torsion bars?
Do you think my earlier idea of fitting the AUS front locker would end up a better option overall? Especially with the front offset donut diff bush things:augie
I've read on here somewhere that an extra 17mm can be gained with remade bushes up front.
 
Coil overs will gain absolutely nothing. The suspension doesn't acre what sort of springs it has so long as it has springs the limitation inthe front suspension is in the wishbone design and specifically that you run out of travel and ball joint angle. Try dropping the front shocks off with the car jacked up you'll find there is no more travel to be had.

Front locker or even a welded front diff has to be an improvement and may well help stop broken shafts as will stop the tendency to spin up the wheel that goes light but still won't help keep all 4 on the floor.

Wishbones ought to be up to coilovers if someone really wanted to (clearance might be an issue though - but not sure the top mounts would be without some beefing up, stitch welding all the bracketry as a minimum I'd say.

Full front axle diff drop like Bluebull had done has to be a good option 4" and then some 4" rear springs (I had him some made specially), calimini do a kit but its only a series of spacers, easy enough to replicate. This would get back some of the droop travel that you loose when you wind up the bars and allow the fitment of larger tyres at the front too as it is essentially a body lift, though infact is a subframe drop.

Basically you unbolt all the front cross members, and then refit them using spacers to lower the front diff, lower wishbones and torsion bars, then you fit great spacers to the top ball joint or custom top arms designed to give the same offset and off you go the front end is 4" higher.

The kit is for the leaf sprung hardbody though so you can't get rear coil springs from them.
 
yes but bluebull's kit was 1.5 grand. plus the rear springs and fitting .

the troll chassis is quickest cheepest and will out do any kit cos you loose the steering problems.

oh and if you break it again you wont be buying a new kit at the massive prices . you just buy trol bits

oh and another thought imagine how it would look with troll width and t2 body giant wheels sticking out....

im looking for my trol already . thats the way im going now
