most mornings i get a little puff of blackish smoke when accelerating , this only happens when cold , after a few miles it seems to clear , is this fuel filter or hopefully not turbo ?

this is a isuzu bighorn 3.1 td .

no other symptoms , car seems to have no loss of power

small puffs of black smoke when accelerating are (in my experience) the norm for most diesel engines, don't let it worry you :thumb2

I agree with PLank. Even I, the eternal worryier, dontbother abotu a puff of black smoke.

Simply look at buses you follow, other 4x4s etc, they all do it, even trains do it lol!

what you worry about, is CLOUDS of smoke, the sort that hangs in the air...

Stop worrying! She aint going well til your rolling coal out the back!!!!! ;_)

Trade it in for a Terrano or Mistral :augie:augie:augie

:lol:lol

ok , so this little puff of black smoke is getting worse ,its now like a cloud of soot when setting off from a standstill ...... although it never does it when moving and giving it some serious beans on overtaking etc, ive been advised that blanking off the egr valves will cure this ( i have 2 egr valves ) , so ive aquired a blanking kit , but now im having reservations whether it will work / be legal for emissions etc ....... any advice chaps ? .... its a 1992 bighorn 3.1td auto

briggie you should follow me for a mile or two and i promise you wont ever worry again....

if clivvy aint going to worry about it its not worth your time..:lol

Briggie, blanking off the EGR valves can only help with the immisions if they were at fault in the first place. How's your air filter?

pffftttt!!!!

I wouldn't worry about a puff of black smoke when moving off from standstill. Most old diesels do it, and that's an old diesel. Observe as you travel through Brighouse buses and other 4x4's mate, they all do it, and buses are generally very well maintained. You only worry when you are trailing smoke upon acceleration over a distance, which you say it isn't. I would say blanking off the EGR will be nothing but positive, and is unlikely to affect emissions unless as MakeItFit says you have an existing problem.

Blank off the EGR, buy some "stop smoke" or engine cleaner, chuck that in and BLAST it. Check the air filter, and check the MAF it it has one. Get some injector cleaner in there too, but generally black smoke can be caused by many things, but in particular EGR, dirty injectors etc.

so basically you agree that blanking off the egr valves ( like i said there are two as per the pic ) will be beneficial ?

the puff of smoke is now a cloud of sootish type smoke when setting off , very black and sorta hangs in the air a while , thats whats concerning me

Hi Briggie, Happy New Year to you.
What sort of driving are you doing, short distances say less that 5 miles each time, or longer distances. ? ie how warm does it get?

Also can you think where you last filled up, was it your normal place? Poor fuel !

A good thrashing, some injector cleaner may help.

It sounds like a fuelling issue to me, ie not burning properly.
Too much fuel, (or not enough air, air filter), poor injector spray.

Not engine oil, so turbo and piston rings are probably ok.

Edit: just thought, if one of the temperature sensors is used by the ECU, then if this is not working or poor connection, the ecu may overfuel.

Best regards,
Rustic

exactly Rustic, as suggested, blank the EGR and get some fuel cleaner/injector cleaner in there, you can even try de-coking it as well if you are inclined, but as you have the kit, blanking the EGR is well worth it for starters.

Mine farts out black smoke too when cold, I think it's what all diesel engines do

ive drove loads of diesels in my life , and none have ever spewed out thick black sooty type smoke that hangs in the air , at first i thought turbo , but the smoke isnt blue / white , air filter was changed about 3 months ago , ive even tried changing fuel stations over the past few weeks that this thing has started to happen , but it makes no difference :nenaua

truck often gets a good thrashing as there is lots of hills around here

no, what we are saying is, a puff of black smoke out the back IS normal, clouds of it hanging in the air isn't normal. BUT all suggestions should be ticked off, certainly do the egr now you have the blanking kit for it.

Look at it like this, all this smoke out the back....next time you go through a speed camera it can't read the plate, Jobs a good'un. Happy new year. David.

Short journeys clog injectors, Give it some stick up the motorway for a hour.

thats ok , but it only does it when setting off from a standstill

Low revs, low speed, low fuel pump pressure, so it could be dirty injectors.:nenau

At higher revs/speed = higher pump pressure, so not as big a problem.

The amount of black smoke could be the same, but at higher speed it could be being dispersed more.

Have you tried injector cleaner?, also rev it keep in lower gears for longer.
