Should a terrano have a warning buzzer for when you open the doors to warn you that the headlights are on?

Any idea where I can find it. Think the previous owner might of disconnect it:nenau

It's in the Time Control Unit:

IGNITION KEY WARNING CHIME AND LIGHT WARNING CHIME
The ignition key and light warning chime are controlled by the TCU.
The warning chime is combined with the TCU.
The light warning chime will not sound, when ignition switch is in the “ON” or “START” position. (When power
supply exists at TCU terminal U01 .)
With ignition switch in the OFF position, driver’s door open, and lighting switch in 1ST or 2ND position, warning
chime will sound.
Or, with the key in the ignition switch in the “ACC” or “OFF” position, and locking the driver’s door from the
inside, the warning buzzer will sound.

Yes, I think this as part of a relay, well on the 2.7 td anyway, not sure about tdi.
Just noticed your avitar, engine 2.8?
Surely a 2.7 tdi :nenau

Its is the complete body control module, yes, it can be changed but it is not a trivial job as it includes the central locking control and this would need to be reprogrammed too.
The same or similar units are fitted to the Primera and I think also the Almera, these can be found on ebay from around 10 quid.
the part number 5WK4 4 8540 is what you want.

Personally I'd consider rigging up another independent H/L warning system, probably easier and cheaper in the long run...

I wouldn't know where to start with a independent buzzer. Can the Central locking be reprogrammed easily. ?

not sure but think the buzzer is a separate item, if so it may have failed, 60p from Maplin, Rick

Take out the door switches and check no one has left one of them disconnected or has one of them had gone faulty - open circuit.

Link / short the connector on the drivers door switch, put the lights on and the buzzer should sound.

On my 2002MY the warning chime is definitely contained in the TCU module.
Earlier models may without the TCU would certainly differ.
There is a test procedure in the EL section of the workshop manual that will test all of the door switches and more, without the need to disassemble anything.
All done from the comfort of the drivers seat:
There is a useful diagnostic mode for the Time Control Unit which will check all of the important switches and sensors that can cause issues with the central locking. Very quick and easy to do and saves a lot of time compared to running around with a test meter.

TCU diagnostics: from workshop manual pages EL-182/EL-183

START
NOTE: Before entering diagnostic mode, make sure the vehicle is fully unlocked, the ignition is switched off and the hazard switch is off.

STEP 1) Press the rear defogger switch exactly 6 times within 10 seconds.
The hazard lamp flash at 3 Hz for 1 second to confirm step 1.

STEP 2) Within 10 seconds after confirmation of step 1, turn the ignition ON, for at least 2 seconds.
The hazard lamp will flash at 3Hz for 1 second to confirm step 2.

STEP 3) Within 10 seconds after confirmation of step 2, turn the ignition off, remove the ignition key and press the rear defogger switch for at least 5 seconds, then release.
The hazard lamp will flash at 3Hz for 1 second to confirm step 3, and diagnostic mode is entered.

You can now proceed to test all of the door switches sensors etc.
There are 15 tests, all successful tests will flash the hazard's once, eg. open drivers door from closed: hazard's will flash once if good.

1) Driver’s door opened from closed (all other doors closed)
2) Passenger or rear door opened from closed (all other doors closed)
3) Driver’s door locked from unlocked
4) Passenger door locked from unlocked
5) Rear doors locked from unlocked (with ultrasonic model)
6) Ultrasonics cancel switch is pressed (with ultrasonic model)
7) Trunk or back door is opened from closed
8) Hood is opened from closed (with ultrasonic model)
9) Hazard switch is pressed from off
10)Turn signal switch is moved to left from off 11) Turn signal switch is moved to right from off
12) Key turned to lock position in door
13) Lighting switch turned 1st position or 2nd position from off
14) Key put in ignition cylinder from out
15) Central unlock switch is pressed
