i guess so. you really need toolbox try to pm him if this dont catch his attention.
my in experienced thought would be if you can fill the oil from the oil cap then if you got pressure it would show up at the filler too. you shouldn't have pressure there so if you have you got a problem

then you could be looking at head gasket on the oil side

take the filler off and cover it with your hand you will feel pressure then if you got it

more likely to be worn piston rings/cyl bore, or in extreme cases exhaust valve guides
if it "chuffs" it could be head
gasket but performance would be down , if it's a steady stream of gasses prob rings

i'd be surprised if it was the engine, its only done abound 68k miles with a FSH....but you never know! In any event it pulls like a train otherwise...

the oil is coming from the top of the dipstick Jeremy....

checkout crankcase breather system first

Cam cover and sump shouldn't be under pressure, check your crank case breather isn't blocked :thumb2

some vehicles do have pressure in rocker box and crankcase by design it's called positive crankcase pressure!! and run poorly if it is lost!!!
And you diden't use the word "first" so there!

Dipstick update

Ok not happy. :(

...removed the dreaded canister from its associated pipework, and although there was evidence of oil having passed through into it, the damn thing was completely clear - no blockages whatsoever, and not swimming in oil or anything like that.

so before I start to believe that I might have internal problems with this motor, which as I said, has a FSH and only done 60k-odd miles so I'm reluctant to think so, is there anything else I can check that might be causing the dipstick to ejaculate(!)?

The motor is running fine as far as I can tell and pulls like a train; no different to our automatic, so I find it hard to believe its the engine itself....but if thats what it is...:(

What if I've overfilled the oil? the dipstick on these things is really long and often hard to read accurately because it goes so far in, picking oil up on its way out again, even when you've cleaned it....would overfilling cause this problem?

is oil coming from the top of the dipstick tube or the bottom of the dipstick tube?

also i guess a good test would be can you blow done the hose that goes the the rocker cover
to see if thats clear

over filling is really bad

well you could look and see if its too full when did you last do the oil ?

I just throw the odd litre in when I think it needs it and the dipstick reading can be actually seen...I might dip it tomorrow and see...

no rush................................................................................................................................................................................

i read on some post something about french chalk on your dipstick to get a clear reading

you'll have to spin it up the road Friday to see if you think its performing as well as it should....I'm assuming any problem with rings etc.. would cause a noticeable power loss which I'm just not getting....

id say following you a month ago there is nothing wrong with performance and no smoke.... unless you over filled since

i recon you'd need shit loads in there for it to get thrown out the dipstick

so that would point to pressure to me take the filler cap off while its running and see if you got pressure

are you talking about when we went up to Rhandirmwyn, cos that was the wifes old truck Colin...

I'm thinking though - it wasn't doing this when i got it in January and the only thing thats happened since then was the garage in Llandovery doing a service on it....I've got no smoke or power-loss symptoms.....I'm wondering if the oil filter could have a part to play......could it be a 'dodgy' one perhaps? If it was not flowing fully, could it cause pressure to build up in the crankcase?

possible..... some do complain about oil filters .
do a search in the threads history

you could do a cyl leakage test which involves removing injectors and fitting a low pressure air feed with the piston on TDC (compression) on the cyl under test (put vehicle in gear or it will set off if piston moves) apply some air then listen to how much it leaks, see if one is worse than others, sykes pickavant or someone probably make a kit for doing all this but that is how we used to do it years ago
