Well it turns out (cos it got worse on my little run out to Wigan) that the spattering on the back of my truck is coming from an oil leak from the dipstick. I've had oil blowing out of a worn out filler cap seal before but never this.

Two queries:

1. I assume its just a replacement O-ring?

2. Should I be worried about oil pressure being somewhere it shouldn't, in case this is oil blowing past the seal because of excessive pressure?

Cam cover and sump shouldn't be under pressure, check your crank case breather isn't blocked :thumb2

anyone know where that is without me going to the manual?

haven't you left for your trip yet Bat?

big black plastic thing just above and slightly forward of the turbo

its one of the pipes leading away from that

think you follow the 1/2 inch hose that goes to the air hose, back to the engine. mine was chucking oil into the turbo on lou's truck

OK had a squint in the drak and think I know the thing you mean.....plastic canister about half the size of a coke can....

One pipe coming up from way below the engine into the bottom of it (whats that one?) and a fatter one going from the top rear down (it looks) to the air inlet either before or after the turbo, not sure which.

Looks like I can remove it by taking off the jubilee clips top and bottom and one retaining bolt...but what am I looking for, will the canister be full of crap, or the pipes or both?

and what exactly is the canister for - is this the infamous 'oil-catcher'?

i guess so. you really need toolbox try to pm him if this dont catch his attention.
my in experienced thought would be if you can fill the oil from the oil cap then if you got pressure it would show up at the filler too. you shouldn't have pressure there so if you have you got a problem

then you could be looking at head gasket on the oil side

take the filler off and cover it with your hand you will feel pressure then if you got it

dont know which pipe it is tbh , just know it takes the oil particles from the air that goes down the breather pipe.

ffs dont break it , they are £200.......

might just be the pipe that leads to it , not the unit itself.

so maybe disconnecting the pipes, flushing the canister and running the engine with it off to see if theres pressure coming through the pipe might be a good way to start...

I'm stunned! wasn't it you saw all those Terrano's in the scrapper near Glastonbury?

This page from the manual makes it a bit clearer, so will have a look tomorrow night...

They remove the engines and sell them to taxi drivers AFAIR

I suspect that market won't be around for long as they have new emissions to meet in London - there are places converting the Nissan diesel into a petrol unit would you believe - costs six grand to do though! turbo-taxi...thats funny!

6000 as in pounds ? :nenau

You are not the first to have oil leaking at the base of the dipstick, fairly sure there is a seal of some sort on it that will need sorting.
As for crankcase pressure, you are correct about the breather system and a good clean out wont do any harm, the breather comes from the rocker cover to the pot any oil in the fumes is then suppose to run down the bottom pipe to the sump and the fumes are passed through a valve in the top to the inlet pipe. Check all the pipes are clear and ok.

Not sure if I have misread your initial post, is the oil coming from the base of the dipstick tube or from where the stick fits in?
