The old Landrover could be hosed out, sheep could be put in the back, if the farmer backed ito a wall, it didn't rust, mirrors and lights that were bashed by cows were cheap to replace.

The army bolted things to them, put in lockers accessed from the outside, you could stand on the bonnet, I have even stood on the roof of a series IIa.

It was a truck, a pick up, they even have cherry picker type lifts....

I think they simply want out of that market.... BIG MISTAKE :doh

There is nothing that can replace the adaptability of the original Land Rover.

The earlier ones had the option of power take off, an extra prop shaft that could be fitted that could run agricultural equipment or a mechanical winch, that was what the 5 inch diameter hole that was on the rear chassis, on the series IIa, that one even had a crank handle.

They even did a caterpiller tracked version.

If they were more reliable... :nenau but they could never really be comfortable, or quiet, as they were designed as a work horse.

What are they thinking of....:doh

I think it LOOKs nice, but although they claim otherwise, it will quickly lose its niche in the market, and become another school run 4x4 capable of parking on the school fields. shame.

I think what they should have done, was maintained the functionality of the original, kept it simple, cheap and effective, but they are pushing towards more profits. Its a shame really because I think, in these modern times, the Defender looks fantastic. Its great that you can buy a new defender, and it pretty much look identicle to an older early 90s model.

all that, shall soon be gone.

More to go wrong.Give me an old S3 any day.Nothing that a bit of wire and a large hammer can't fix. This one looks pretty but once again out of reach for the likes of John Average.:(

Just done a google image search lots of pics on there, still think its ugly.

instead of all these gadgets which increase the price of vehicles , i think there is a market for a simple no frills 4x4 which does what it says on the tin

Well I suppose Land Rover are looking at the increasing use by farmers and others of Land Cruiser, Sportage, and other 4x4s and thinking if we don't update, we won't have any market left. Seems to me they are just playing catch up to other 4x4s. Even Nissans are been seen around farms and on sites, and they have a higher comfort level than Landys.

Yeah i agree, think they are killing the idea of it, bet it hasnt even got a proper chassis any more :( just looks like a freelander or a small disco

but yeah i have seen more and more farmers round here with navaras etc... and pickups so i suppose they are still trying to keep in the market? i think they should keep the defender and release some sort of pick up or crew cab? but keep the simple mechanics

A hell of a lot of small ones, and they are getting fewer and fewer. Won't be long 'til we have no farms at all. Truth is the defender is rare over here, except for really remote areas. Most farmers are in in shiny crew cabs or pick-ups, with the Toyotas being very popular, in pick-up and Land Cruiser, they are more likely to be using Jap 4x4 than Land Rovers, could be something to do with reliability, I suppose. Our electricity company and our national broadcaster still use Defenders, but they need to go to the masts in remote areas. Electricity company use quite a few Unimogs too.

Indeed, yes - it was called the Cuthbertson.

I've seen two of them - a green one at the Motor Heritage Centre at Gaydon (still there AFAIK) and the other at Lix Toll garage near Killin in Scotland (see photo) - unfortunately that was sold when the garage changed hands and is now in South America somewhere.
