Hi all My 98 t2 tdi has been running great for past yr but the other night i was on a run and i lost power and it started to chuff white smoke. I managed to get it home but now she wont rev any more than 2.5k and bellows white smoke and engine light is on. I used the download to get the codes and there are around 4 different ones relating to fuel shut off cylinder1. Iv checked turbo and fuel lines and all looks good? Any ideas? thanks jimmy

Can you be more specific with the codes you have pulled? Can you erase them, and then see which reoccur?

I would imagine you have a problem either with the needle lift sensor on injector 1, or the timing solenoid on the pump, and the ECU is in limp mode which is causing the restricted revs.

White smoke is a sign of very retarded (i.e. late) injection.

Tim.

37- fuel shut off solenoid 1 circuit malfunction.
94-fuel injection timing solenoid circuit malfunction.
21-fuel injection timing solenoid injector needle lift sensor malfunction.
36- fuel shut off solenoid 1 malfunction.
13-engine coolant temperature sensor circuit malfunction.
95- Not listed on download.

Thanks jimmy.

Hi,i've just bought a Maverick SWB 2.5 turbo diesel & it to wont rev over 2000rpm but there is no smoke.? No lights on dash either.? Can you or someone pls help.? Do i need a garage or can i sort it myself.?

keep an eye on this forum as they may be similar faults but mine poors smoke out. good luck:thumbs

Ta, will do. Got it today very cheep, its gotta be something silly & easy to sort
But knowing my luck :doh

Adz in particular but jimmy92 too, check to see if you have a mini filter under the fuel union banjo bolt. Adz you almost certainly will have as all te early ones do, jimmy92 its not so plain as some do and some dont.

Anyway, remove the banjo bolt clean the filter and replace. On TD's particularly this is the most common fault and even on TDi's its probably second most common after MAF sensor.

Its certainly worth a look, and best f all its a free fix if it does work.

I checked that but mine has no filter. I think its a sensor or even the pump that's failed as it was running spot on then out of the blue, smoke no power and warning light. gutted as i had full faith in the good old bus.

I take it its had a recent main fuel filter too?

Worth checking the filter for correct seating of the seal and tightness.

Also check the fuel lines, white smoke when it isn't filter related is often porous fuel lines on these trucks. They start to suck air, so can't compress the fuel properly so the injection goes all over the place, too little fuel and too big droplets so it doesn't burn all the fuel and hence the white smoke, different to too rich when you get black smoke from only partial burning (oxidising) all of the fuel.

I had a hand pump so i by passed the filter and put a pipe in to a jug with some fuel in to eliminate all lines from tank and the filter.
