Been hearing a small intermittent knocking noise. Appears to come from front left wheel, seems to happen as suspension lifts/wheel drops. Thought it had been getting worse, don't drive the truck that much so thought I'd put it up on the ramps and have a gander.

Went all over the suspension with a pry bar, can't find anything with play in it at all. While I was under it I thought I might as well grease up the track rod ends as they were new last year and have grease nipples. After, I took the truck for a spin down the road to get it warm, having stopped/started a few times going up and down ramps.

I can't get the noise to re-occur.

Is it possible that the noise was coming from the track rod ends needing some grease?

I was going to suggest drop links but you do have to wonder don't you. Get it driven around a bit more and see how it goes.

How are the compression rod rubber bushes? If they are worn the steel bush inside starts chewing through the mounting point. Caused knocking sound on mine...

Straightforward repair, once all the nuts are loose :lol

What are they?

Where are they?

Front of the car, behind the wheels: horizontal metal bar, going from the bottom wishbone (attached with 2 bolts) towards a mounting bracket welded to the chassis.

Rubber bush met a metal insert is located on either side of the bracket. Have a look at the pictures here (Pathfinder, but part looks the same).

I would have gone with either upper/lower ball joints or anti roll bar links but if you've checked those I'm stumped :nenau

It may still be those, I'm not very experienced at trying to diagnose this kind of problem. My main aim yesterday was to make sure nothing was about to collapse or fall off! I certainly couldn't find anything obvious, so I at least know that it's safe to continue using it.

I will continue to monitor the situation!

I've got to admit mate I couldn't really tell that my upper ball joints had gone until Craig and Elt told me how to do it right and you should have seen the play I had :O

Thanks for that. I think I know the part you mean, didn't really know what/ how to assess that piece.

As I've just posted, nothing about to fall off/collapse, so going to keep an eye on it.

Thanks for the info.

This is the problem. I'm levering here there and everywhere with a pry bar, and to a passer-by by I probably look like a skilled amateur but to a mechanic I probably look like an unskilled orangutang trying to get a peanut out of a coke Can!

Well, since your T2 is about 11 years old, if these parts haven't been changed before, it is about time :)

Upper, lower balljoints, steering links, compression rod bushes, anti-roll bar bushes...
Did them all the past 2 years, made a world of difference to mine.
