knocking noise

as above yesterday driving home from a w/end away,, terrano was running fine then this knocking started from the engine for a good 5 mins then went :nenauany ideas any one its a 3.0 di just now am alittle worried to say the least

hi sounded like big ends to be honest ,,funny how its started after the warrenty has ended it was that bad i had to turn it off but restarted it and still knocking left it on tick over while i unhitched the caravan and it stopped :nenau drove the motor home no loss of power so at a loss to what the noise was but has me a lot worried ,, i know the 3.0 di is a bit noiser than the 2,7 but this sounded like a tank when the knocking happend even the wife said what the hell is that

oil ok?? could be tappets perhaps, or a running issues with the engine, maybe filters or a egr issues (if you have egr)

fan blades catching/distorted ?.... ie when under load fan is on ..... just a idea ...... yes i realise i know nuffin , but its a idea

Also check bearing play in waterpump, alternator, power steering and air con pump.

If it's a higher frequency drumming then it could be loose bolts on the protection plates under the engine / gearbox .

Big ends are noisier under load.

Could it be a blocked injector?
Any fault codes?

well this knocking nosie for some reason has gone been back to the garage from were it come from and they looked at it reved it drove it check all of the water pump and pullys check all the running gear out and no nosie so god only knows what the hell it was ,, well lets hope it never comes back ,, but if it dose lets hope it breaks at least i will know what it is ,,

well i can only put that down to me thinking it was sumit on the engine rather then the prop ,as it was knocking while on tick over while reverseing the caravam back on tick over , but when the speed was built up the nosie went ,and only notice the prop to day , and the state it was in , as it only started knocking as i was slowing down so i started thinking the worsted as any one would :augie as for the nosie on tick over just give me a slap head was thinking also and thinking the worst or could of it been a derv knock ,EGR :augie

I had a similar problem with the front prop, see here:

The original (improved???) prop had no grease nipples, ended up replacing it with one from an earlier model with grease nipples....

thanks for that should of taken a picture of mind to shown you guys was almost hanging on think a few more miles and it would of flung off it was that bad ,could of been nasty if it had

your engine knocking would most probably be an injector squirting instead of atomizing for some reason, sticky needle bit of swarf from somewhere and then it cleared itself, I would not worry about it unless it does it again, then get your injectors serviced, Rick

A dose of RedX or similar may help.

I do that every 5 tanks of fuel, and in 16 years never had any issues.
Was on Special offer last weekend at ASDA....
