i have had a knocking noise and it goes when I put my foot down on the clutch for about 2 months .but getting worse the last couple of weeks. plus I have noticed for the pass couple days I can feel the clutch slipping . would this be the release bearing . it on my terrano 2.7 tdi manual box . oh i had my clutch changed about a year ago and only covered about 5000 miles on it

Does sound like it.
Easy way to test clutch.put in 5th gear with handbrake on and lift clutch.
If it stalls clutch ok if it keeps running clutch slipping.

Re slipping have you checked leak off pipes running fuel down into bell housing? :thumb2

Should not be slipping after only 5k and unlikely to be the release bearing as it is still in contact with the pressure plate when pedal up, elty forgot to say when doing the test, throttle to the floor, as for your knocking if your box is full of oil and it has got noticeably worse over a short space of time then I would be looking for a box, I do have a TDi one here but cannot vouch for it as when I had the engine running it had layshaft rattle, having said that I had a rattly one for 3 years and it is still going, Rick

Yeah floor it:lol
Been driving an auto for so long I forgot what that far left pedal is for:lol

clutch is fine stall car quick . so next question . does anyone know roughly how much it would cost to have my box refurbed . because if I go down the second hand route I might be paying out for one with the same problems as mine . as I did get a second hand engine for my Vectra and after 1 month the head went and just worried the same going to happen with this

All you can do is ring some local companies for prices, not sure if there are any recommended garages on here....now there's a thought :

EDIT
Above Looks good...£750 for the Xtrail !!

On that website I don't understand the big price difference for gearbox and transfer box between older & newer models. Would have thought parts & labour to do a recon would be about the same.

I also used David Beaumont (4x4gearboxes.co.uk) all the prices exclude VAT and he has a £100 (plus VAT) deposit against the old unit.

So gearbox £600 plus a £120 refundable deposit.

So far so good.
