Hi,

Just bought a Maverick off ebay, not even viewed it so bit of a gamble. Had a Disco before, which generally just fell apart so i'm hoping this one will be ok. 1 owner, no towbar, but up on miles (190K) picking up later today. any advise as to what obvious signs to look for? will have to service it this week to be on safe side, difflock still best place to get oils from? based north manchester

:D:confused:

just check it looks right and sounds right
check the 4wd works

the rear seat belt mounts can rust before the rest of the truck (inside the rear arch)

not much goes wrong with them that cant be fixed anyway

what was the item number on ebay.... might give us a clue what we are talking about

Thanks extreme,
item number 330336812813, listings ended so don't know if you can still view. if not i will try to cut and paste

certainly looks ok,

so its just a good look around underneath the 4wd works etc

i have a tdi and a td... the tdi is faster at 125 bhp the one your looking at is 100 bhp. but that's not an issue really if you want more ooomph later , you can fit a tdi intercooler very easy.
tow bars can be bought for 10.00 from ebay if you need one.

what are you wanting to do with it. towing or greenlaning

oh and they run on svo too that will help with fuel prices

UInlike LR you cannot use 4wd on tarmac ,so find a bit of rough ground to try out, with lsd in rear gets you out of situations easily, just make sure you put lsd oil in it.

Hey looks sweet m8. Theres no timing chain or belt to worry about as these are gear driven. You don't really 100% know it's history so when you give it a full service change the gear oil (if the drain plug isn't stuck), rear diff oil (ensure you use proper LSD Oil and transfer box oil (some people prefer to use synthetic oil for this mineral oil tends to thicken and cause drag which has the same effect as putting in 4wd).
Rust spots to watch for are as said the rear seat belt mounts in the rear wheel arch and the rear of the sills inner and outer but these are nothing that can not be fixed.
Front Auto Locking Free Wheeling Hubs (big thing in middle of both front wheels), if not used this can seize buts theres lots of threads and downloadable workshops to help you fix em.
Anti Roll Bar Links front and rear tend to wear especially if used off road.
Loud noise at the front on full lock, fixed with a splodge of grease. It's the steering stops.

Nice motors, I've had mine for seven years and no reason to change other than a newer one. Take it on an organised green lane trip it'll blow your socks off.

its mainly for towing, caravan & possibly horse box(!). it looked a good buy, so only time will tell....i'll have a good look around it.
thanks for the advice.
upgrade to intercooler - parts from scrapper ok or best to buy new?

and its the same engine as used in the older London taxis (Fairway or FX, can't remember which), so galactic mileage should be on the cards if properly serviced. :thumb2

And think about it ( as you clearly did!), what sort of Disco , or Landy for that matter, are you gonna get for that money???:D

Enjoy your truck, hope it turns out well, but loads of nice helpful people on here if theres any issues to fix - just use the right oils and parts as advised. Droplinks are cheap and easy to replace if you spot anything amiss there.:cool::cool:

ebay or scrapper - one thing you'll find is OEM parts at Nissan can be expensive, but there are nearly always alternatives.:thumbs

someone here is always breaking one or breakers.

your looking at 40-50 quid for all the bits hoses, pipes & intercooler. i still have to do it to my td, but ive got lots to do to that:D

Im breaking a tdi so if you want a towbar and intercoller drop me a pm. i wont charge the world just beer money. :thumb2

I've had mine since new 1995, 14 years and no major issues, If it ain't broke .... don't fix it. Garaged, used daily, no body rust, waxoyled from new.
85k Miles, engine just run in according to the high mileage ability of these vehicles.
The only major problems that people have had, has been a noisy gearbox, and I put some molyslip in as a precaution.
If I got a "newer vehicle" it would cost me more to run.
This year I spent £28 ( plus usual service items, oil filter etc) to get it through MOT, pair front ARB drop links.
Last year wiper blades, Oh the expense...:augie
Best regards, Rustic

Got it yesterday afternoon. not had chance to give it a good look over. Drives ok, runs a bit cold (dodgy thermostat?), gearbox bit notchy, but no major clunks from suspension or transmission. Bit of rust on sills, chassiss needs steam clean and waxoyl. my kids love it, can't get them out of it! need to change all the oils (does any one have the oils specs?) then give it a good run.

Overall well pleased with it, its in fab condition for its age/mileage. My old Disco was a '93 and 4 years ago it was rusting to bits!
All the 4WD High and Low engage smoothly. :) :)
