Just bought Maverick

I am in South Wales and just bought a 95 Maverick
Seems to run ok but a couple of niggles -freeplay in steering wheel- about 15mil
Tightened belt and took up a little but still not right-does UJ on column wear?
Can you adjust steeering box in normal way?
(Screwdriver /lock nut )
Showing 144.000 miles at present
Would like to do a major service -anything out of the ordinary on these I need to know about?
Seems to be a lot of crusty dried old oil around head,exhaust manifold and on sump but doesnt appear to be dripping oil anywhere.

Only gotcha I can think of is to ensure you use LSD oil in rear diff.
Steering play sounds about normal.. think MOT allows for somthing like 30mm.

Hi chap and congrats on your new Mav!

well, the 95's are TD engines, no I/C to worry about, so the oil around the sump etc is most likely from being spilled, or a previous leak - engine degreaser to clear it all up then you can inspect further.

Servicing is what you would expect except make sure you use correct LSD in the rear diff ONLY. Other than that its all basic - use a decent fuel filter and oil filter as it has been known for cheaper ones to not quite seal.

As for steering, definitely check the steering relay rod, the links are attached either side and cant be replaced - you would have to change the whole centre relay rod, not horrifically expensive but worth doing. Not saying it is that, but at 144k miles, if it hasn't already been done I would be VERY surprised if the steering issue wasn't down to that!

Welcome mate, yes box can be adjusted but only if moving the wheel does not produce instant response from the drop arm, I have had 5 T2's and only one needed adjusting, if there is any other play then check the ball joints and do not forget the idler, Rick

Going to be towing small-650-700K -caravan around UK over next few weeks then will do full service
Anybody had any experience with SWBs and towing ?-heard can be a bit "bouncy"!
Holding my breath until I get a couple of hundred miles out of her...

you wont notice with that weight. My old SWB towed a caravan of similar weight, and I just didn't feel it was there. SWB's aren't bouncy when towing, they are a bit bouncy regardless but you wont notice it with a caravan on the back.

Not a problem towing with SWB, I'd go as far as to say that they are better than a LWB more compact etc.as you see in my profile I have a 7mtr van at around 1600 kgs and no problem and spent 6 weeks towing around Scotland inc Cape Wrath.
Probably get some flack for saying SWB is better,im waiting.

I have a SWB,Previous owner used to tow a caravan From Doncaster to Devon.He did this a couple of times a year.For around three years or so.I have no idea as to the size and weight of the caravan though.
