Luckily for me I decided to take a look at my Aquarium whilst I was up first thing making a cup of tea for me and the Missus to sup whilst we watched TV in bed before facing the day.

Saw that the water level in my tank had dropped by about 4 inches due to the sump pump having stopped working. Luckily the temperature had only fallen by a few degrees so put spare pump in place and had a look at the failed one.

I hoped it had just stopped due to debris in the inlet but no such luck.

The pump was new in April 2014 and has a 12 month warranty so its out of guarantee.
As my spare new pump was the same model a 24 volt DC pump with speed control I was able to check if it was actual pump failure/ power supply failure/ or speed control unit fault.

Turned out to be the power suppy 24 volts DC maximum of 4 amps had failed. Not impressed with its lifespan. Just ordered a Generic power supply off e-bay hope it lasts a bit longer!

Previously used Oceanrunner pumps but liked the idea of just having jus 24 volts in my tank rather than 240 volts. Any members into fish tanks with suggestions as to a more reliable manufacturer. I like Eheim but they are somewhat pricey and not particularly efficient in terms of g.p.h. and power consumption.

If it was a reputable pump manufacturer from a reputable retail outlet, have a word in the shop expressing concerns about how you're surprised at such a well thought of product could fail so soon and mention things like goodwill even though it's out of warranty.
Good luck.
You never know. I got 150 quid of the price of a replacement sofa in this way.
John Lewis are awesome btw.

Sale of goods act say you can get a replacement, partial refund or full refund up to six years after purchasing a product, depends how much it cost you in the first place vs how much time you want to spend looking into it

Tried that but all they would do as I am a long standing customer is offer me 10% off a new one. I can get it about 30% cheaper on flea bay.

Not heard of that before might be worth considering for high value items.
Pump was £125 and I can get one on the web for aound £90 identical UK spec model.

I've got a tetratec ex1200,got to be 10 years old now and only ever had to replace the lid seal.
Only good for upto a 500 ltr tank but well worth the money.

They obviously don't understand the goodwill element, the other side of this is how easy it is for you to change suppliers.
How frequently you bought from them and how long it will take before they realise that they've lost a customer.
On a personal level i'd have no qualms about naming and shaming (only using facts) on social media.
Shoddy salesmanship on their part.

TBH I like Fluval filters was running a 206 on my 3ft malawi tank & it handled the bio load great (have maxed the filter with bio media) only problem i've had was the pump head seal failed but wrapped some PTFE tape around the seal as a temp fix & it worked but never got around to replacing the seal & that was 20 months ago oops for a big tank i'd go for a fluval FX5 or 6:thumbs huge things but work fantastically
