We have been racking the mileage up on the Jeep in the last few months (2k this year) so took it to a newly opened garage in town for a quick health check plus oil & filter change.

It was a while you wait Job and the Garage use Total Oil products so the engine got 6.5 Litres of fully synthetic Total MC3 5W-30 Low SAPS oil that's an OEM specification oil not cheap stuff. Oil Filter make not known. It had a Health Check and cost me £69.99 incl VAT.

No trip to the Tip with waster oil required and no nasty black spots on the drive. TBH my days of doing my own engine oil changes are numbered. Last one I did myself was on the Santa Fe (R.I.P.) a couple of years ago.

I know I am hearing what I want to hear but I swear the engine has never sounded as quiet and sweet as it did today cruising back home on the A50 at 60-70 mph.

Now the old oil looked really dark and thick so I would have expected it to rattle more with thin new oil ? Maybe being thin and new it lubricated the pistons better. Either way I felt it was money well spent.

Psychology of oil change is like the Placebo Medicine effect its a real effect. lol

I think engines do sound better with fresh oil. Banshee once mentioned that his sounds loads better with mineral oil so last oil change on mine was mineral oil and it's so much quieter, even now several weeks later.

Mineral Oil benefits.

You are right older engines do run better on mineral oils.
I can't use a Mineral oil in the Jeep as I don't think anyone makes a mainstream mineral oil that is Low SAPS though I will stand corrected if there is one out there.
With the modern common rail injectors Low Ash oil is a must insisted on by many Vehicle Manufacturers.

Finally!!! Someone else has confirmed my otherwise lunacy, I too wondered if I'd made it up in my head, but it deffo sounds quieter. All the motor factors look at me strange why I tell them I don't want semi-synthetic even though that's what's listed on their systems and in the handbook.

Bad news on 10w40 Mineral though guys, you try and find some now, everywhere I go tells me that their suppliers can no longer get it, I've rang Comma oils and they tell me they are stopping production of it, and the only other brand I've been able to get my hands on was believe it or not Carlube from Morrisons supermarkets and it was very reasonable too.

I've not checked the state of play on eBay recently but last time I looked there was very little about and it was expensive, better stock up if you can find it guys.

What's the shelf life of a motor oil? :nenau

A fellow member got a bulk purchase of the stuff and decanted it into 5litre cans.

Not sure if he got it from a company called Calder Oils?

Try Granville oils. They sell the stuff in a shop near me. I bet Elty can guess the shop ;)

Mineral Oils

Not looked for a couple of years now but Asda Engine Oil was a good value Mineral Oil for Petrol & Diesel engines. Fuchs / Granville used to do quite a few as well.

On e-bay there are a raft of Mineral Oils including Manol.

Hold on, you changed your clutch on your driveway and chuff knows what else, but turning a lever on a barrel pump is too much for ye, I'll never understand you :roflol:

It's not so much the issue of transferring it out into smaller barrels. It's unfortunately the people you have to deal with that mess you about on either money, time etc etc
