sad to say i did put a pump in line and it did not improve the situation.hence replaced ip.

And did you regulate the pressure that the inline pump supplued? I'm guessing that too much pressure is just as bad as no pressure

i confess i did not as it was 4lb pressure one.
fuel got to ip but not through it hence changed ip.maybe a higher pound one might force fuel through but i do not think so.
diesel bob is good but costly.

When I sorted harlowmavs 3 I had one on it at about 40 psi which was too high so bled some off to about 25 and ran OK not sure as said if 2.7 is the same but bearing in mind the fuel pressure regulator that is called the mini filter I would expect the pressure to be similar, so yours at 4 psi was not enough, Rick

Thanks for the clarification. The work round would seem like a good option at the minute, i just really need it back on the road!

Maybe i could install the pump near the tank and then one of these ebay item number 301754626103 further up maybe in the engine bay to regulate and adjust the pressure.

Pressure on that only goes to 5 psi not enough, a work round is to link feed from pump to return to tank with a clamp on the link pipe, fully clamped = full pump pressure open the clamp a little = less pressure to IP, adjust till it runs well at all revs and loads, then read pressure and purchase a reducing valve that can be adjusted to said pressure, Rick

Im certainly hoping so! I've ordered all the bits I think i need. The only thing i might do differently to how you have suggested Rick is instead of connecting the fuel line to the return and using a clamp is I'm thinking I'll fit an inline fuel tap after the new pump that can be partially closed to control the fuel pressure. Can you see any reason why this wouldn't work? Thanks for all the help&fingers crossed!

Sorry no that will not work, closing the tap controls flow rate not pressure, Rick

I got the facet pump fitted today. Car started really easy and sounded good. Until at tickover it started to run lumpy again and eventually cut out. I've fitted clear pipes to the fuel filter but couldn't see if there was air passing through will check tomorrow in day light. I'll also try adjusting the pressure on the pump to see if that has any effect. If not I'm thinking a IP replacement is my next option?

mmmm try putting the inlet to the facet pump in a spare container of fuel and see what happens, and then by pass your fuel filter as well, Rick

just got back from vanning and see this is still ongoing.
as rick says go back to beginning with new pump fed bye a separate container again bypassing all other pipework.
if that still is a no no its as i think a replacement ip.but good luck.

These IP's rely on maintaining an internal case pressure, this is used to hydraulically operate the fuel quantity adjustment.
The case pressure is normally regulated by a ball bearing/spring arrangement prior to the fuel return pipe, if this part wears, has dirt in it or the spring is weak too much fuel is returned and the internal case pressure drops.

Something worth trying:
You can simulate the effect of this by placing a clamp on the return pipe to restrict the flow and hopefully increase the internal case pressure.

Thanks for the suggestions, I'm at work tomorrow but will deffintely give them a try tomorrow night. Cheers. John

A mate came round tonight with better fault code reader and there were 4 codes showing
P1207 control sleeve position sensor
P1206 fuel injection timing feed back
P0215 fuel cut solenoid
P0235 turbo pressure

The 3rd one will be from taking the plunger out of the solenoid on the fuel pump to see if it was at fault and the turbo fault is probably because the intercooler is off it at the minute but the first two could help narrow down the problem. Has anyone else had them show up or have any idea where the control sleeve position senser is?

Looks like naff pump mate sorry, Rick

I've been preparing for the worst but hoped there might be an easier fix.

Fuel pump swap will be a learning experience on a steep curve! Is there any way i can tell if i have a bosch or zexel pump without taking it off, so i can have a replacement ready for when the knackered one comes off?

Also I noticed in another thread that you have swapped one Panelbeater without any electrical problems? Mine is a 53 plate 2.7tdi so im hoping I might be able to do the same unless anyone can think of a reason it might not work?

Check the MAF mate, if it's a Hitachi then you'll have a Zexel pump if it's Bosch, you'll have a Bosch pump :thumb2

as zac says look at maf on air filter in and that will tell you need and then ask rick if he has one,if not let me know.
