I have an XLR 3 pin power socket,

Which one of these will best suit powering my cb radio.

1. Or could i just attach a positive wire from the pos battery to the pos on the CB then run the neg from the CB to an earth point?

2. Or on the fuse pannel (by the steering wheel), are all the slots in that wired up i.e. have power, so i could run a positive from a 5 amp fuse slot to the positive of the CB, and a neg from the CB to earth.

I would rather wire in to the fuse to save the xle 3 socket and the fag lighter.

or is that a bit to pikey?

No run both positive and negative directly to the battery and fuse both. Its best practice with transceivers to do this as it ensures the best power path to them. Most HAM radios come pre-wired this way. The earth side fuse is more to protect the radio from outside spikes etc than it is to protect the wiring etc from the radio - if you se what I mean.

Cheers t-rex

So wack an inline fuse holder for the pos and connect the CB straight to the batt, is that to get cleaner power to the CB?

What about earthing?

Cleaner yes and also to ensure the powers there when you want it - not really an issue on 4w CBs but as I say still best practice.

Do the same with the earth from the CB, run it back to the battery and fuse it too.

ok............... here's good practice :)

Two direct feeds from the battery, only one needs fusing, believe it or not, there is a slight resistance in the fuse, which creates a slight voltage drop, so I'd only fit one fuse, and it should be a slow blow type, not a fast fuse.
Direct earth from the battery, direct positive from the battery, fused of course.

As for the connector, rather than use an XLR, they're good, but, for power connections, I would rather use the Speakon NL4 panel mounted socket and line plug. Greatly enhanced power handling characteristics and the plug locks into position, Neutrik also use gold plated connectors, they do on XLR's but for power, it has to be the NL4 every time.
I fitted one today on my boat so that a transmitter/receiver can be plugged into the helm position and removed when not required. With a weather resistant rubber cover, the sockets withstand saltwater and don't drop out when they get a little worn...........

One thing to be aware of, the aerial should earth onto the body/chassis of the car, I'd be wary of using the negative power cable carry the RF to ground, I would fit a seperate earthing cable from the set to the chassis of the car if a magmount is being used (or any aerial not directly connected to the body of the car). You'll not only get a better signal but also reduce the potential for problems caused by stray transmission reflections toward the ECU.
I did a job for the home office evaluating a variation of tetra which interconnected different police forces, the radios required a much higher power output, the lower power units were earthed via the negative cable to be seperate battery as were the higher power units, unfortunately, the higher power units took out the ECU's on the BMW and Range Rover evaluation vehicles leaving them stranded on the M6.......... The problem was caused by poor shielding but certainly, reflected power on the negative was a contributing factor.
Sorry to all those serving officers for the totally crap radio system they're forced to use these days, not my choice I must say, just the cheapest option chosen by the government of the day.....................

The live has a fuse holder built in to it, although it is about 20cm from the radio. Will this be ok, or should i wack a blade holder in the live next to the car battery?

Also the aerial came on a clamp poss off a roof rack.

I take it the ideal position in behind the sunroof?

Anyone have it on the wing mirrior? or rear wheel bracket but this could be to low?

90% done

Well it went in like a dream, just to tune it with the SWR (get it on mon) and thats it sorted, apart from the magmount:

It looks like it is getting pinched by the door?

Any advances fellas?

The intek being quite small, ment i had to screw 2 bolts to hold it in, and 1 spacer to keep it level, i did cut the back off, but had to remove the cut off, due to it rubbing th eblack part under the cubby hole.

This is my last week then its back to work for me, typical audi and T2 need rear shocks doing< and family and mates coming round all in 1 week!

SWR Arrived today!

So i'll be tuning later on!

Thank you very much fill (phil) and good luck in OZ!

I dont want to leave my springer in the mag mount in case some toe-rag nicks it, can i grease the female thread to avoid corrosion? any ideas?

Next job shocks!(come on t-rex)

how long you going for dan ........only i was thinking maybe it might be good if i take care of your female thread..... like you say you would hate it to be a bit rusty when you get home .

what you recon old buddy old pal:augie

it would be no trouble ............
