I am designing a circuit to keep the engine running without the key in the ignition.
I have it all worked out except the immobiliser. Does it detect the key chip other than at engine start. Has anyone any experience of this?

yep mine does too, just wait a while and yours will, no need for mods :lol :lol :lol

I too found that I could remove the key while engine was running.

yes WHY? and very doggy to I would think, I have only ever done it accidentally as my key is worn but over a longer period I can see the immobiliser checking every now and again for a chip, if it does not find one could be bad news, Rick

It's quite dangerous when you think about it but luckily the steering lock doesn't come on unless the key has been turned back to the "O" position

I think this just comes with age and key/barrel wear :doh

why?....:nenau

at times I need to leave the engine running to charge batteries and run additional loads when I am some distance from the truck. it will be interlocked so it can't be moved without the key being in.

interesting how you going to interlock it? Rick

Keep it simple, have a secret switch, and a relay.

Use the handbrake switch to interlock with a relay, or put a switch on the clutch pedal, that kills the engine, unless by- passed via your secret switch.
You need a relay that is electrically latched, so that once triggered it can't be reset.
Some one opens the door, presses clutch, or releases handbrake... engine cuts out. :thumbs

also there are legalities.
I got a fixed penalty ticket for having my engine running.
at the time I had just started the engine to defrost the window while I locked my work place....:nenau
it apparently was an anti theft law.
my fault leaving my own car open to thieves:nenau

yes it is technically against the law to leave a vehicles engine running while not in attendance, but how do the likes of BMW get round that when they can supply a remote that starts the engine from say in the house that warms it up for you, maybe because the doors are still locked?????, Rick

RAC and AA vans have a feature called 'Run-lock' that allows the driver to press a button on the dash and to take the key out with the engine running. As soon as the gear lever is moved the engine cuts out so the vehicle can't be driven away.

I have designed it to interlock with the handbrake. You will only be able to activate the override with the key in, engine running and the handbrake on.

how are you going to detect that the key is not in? Rick

By detecting that it is in. Some interlock requred.
You could use the accessory output, ie what the radio is fed from.
If the key is in, it usually is in accessory or run position.
The accessory supply drops out when you go into start mode, so something can be done with this I guess.

There is a key inserted/withdrawn switch in the ignition switch assembly, see EL-173.
