Hi guys,

I recently got another T2 in from the local breakers. was going to strip it for parts but after having a good look at it and finding next to no rust, only a small bit on the nearside front wing, Im going to try and get it MOT'd.

I was told the starter was buggered as it did jump start, stupidly I took them at their word and didn't do any tests before I ordered a new starter. Anyway old starter of and the one I got was wrong so I bench tested it and it worked fine... back on it went and had more of a click on the key and eventually if I turned the key back slightly it sprang into life. stopped and started it a few times and found the sweet spot. left it for an hour or so and went to move it and it would turn over but wouldn't fire. couldn't hear the fuel pump working. wiggled the key around for a while and heard the pump and it fired up. Thought it might have a bad earth so I ran an earth from the battery direct to the starter motor bolt but didn't seem to help (did this before the fuel pump didnt work)

so my conclusion is the ignition barrel is knackered, this morning I could't hear the fuel pump engage when I turned the key and no matter how much I wiggled it.

Anyway, sorry this is a bit long winded, do you reckon my conclusion is correct or am I running down the wrong path? If i'm not, It doesn't look that fun to replace, shear bolts by the looks of it clamp the barrel to the steering shaft. and im guessing I would have to program in the new key, it's a 98 model so wold that be old enough not to have to?

Any help would be very much appreciated, i did do a search but I can never seem to find what Im after.

Good news sounds like you don’t need the barrel :thumbs

Instead the switch attached to bottom of the barrel. Look on eBay about a tenner.
Basically remove steering cowls not sure from memory if any of the dash panels need removing too. Switch attached to barrel with one screw which is a little awkward but easily removed.

Is that the black plastic box? been trying to figure out what that is, I assumed it was something to do with the central locking fob. These fancy cars

I agree with the switch diagnosis.

It will be a roundish black switch pretty close to the steering lock end with a wiring plug connected to it.

Ahh those, that was what I got when I looked but didn't think it was that, had a completely different part in my mind.

Well thank you very much guys. Will report back with the results.

See you are east Sussex, fancy some extreme off road stuff next W/E if so look me up, Rick

Well I took it out today and yes it's buggered. managed to split it and broken bits fell out.. new one on the way, thanks guys.

You've got my curiosity?

Well done Greg, great feeling when you get a cheap fix like that isn’t it. :clap:clap

when touring my green terry ip fkd so asked my brother to see what was about where he lives,he found a terry year older tham mine with uaual wings rusr broken f/bumper dented door.
it was at a traders he knew.
they had trouble to start it and they said its a trailer away job as ring gear shot.
it had a long mot,ran on oil and had tow bar so he came and picked me up and we went to dealers, the same trouble to start.bro knew it was not ring gear it was worse than her told me.
took it for test drive tested 4x4 and i agreed a price with them,no warranty though.
in chesterfield we put it on ramp checked brakes and usual stuff.got it started and put derv in and drove 100 mls to van.
next day playing about on field i came to conclusion it was ignition switch back part, orderd one from nissan then went to collect it the next day got back and fitted it.
the thing is it had a new starter on it but because the switch was faulty it broke the new starter so i replaced it and then ran it without any trouble untill i repaired green terry.
it was that good i replaced both front wings and did any welding it needed.
it was the little switch that the end of the key just slips in.had the 2 running for about 2 years but then sold them both for a 3l auto.
yes a nice cheap easy repair just a bitch getting to the screw that holds it in.

Well went past the breakers today so called in on the of chance they had another Terry. Well what do you know a cuppa later and one second hand switch. Back home fitted and working a treat. Have a new one coming anyway so.will keep it as backup. For now just need a battery, work out why the brake light is always on then MOT.

Thanks for the help once again!

Brilliant!!!

As for brake light, check brake light switch. Not 100% sure where it’s fitted but I would guess brake pedal assembly which may involve a little contortionist activity :lol

Not forgetting the head spinning !
