it can cause trouble with some radios I read on here .. but could have JUST been that one

the hot/cold contois connected i checked that when the dash was out, the heater hose from the top of the thermostat housing is getting warm quite quickly but it doesn't last that long (a bit like my sex life lol) the heater fan only works on 4 but that shouldnt really effect the heat it would just mean that it would overwarm the interior (i wish) the viscous fan is going on start up but after a short time you can hear it dis engage (the fan noise stops) i will try flushing it all through again to see if it helps, the strange ones seem to be the top hose hot/warm and the bottom hose cold and the fact that it dumps water after a few trips i have to re fill the radiator, it doesn't miss fire at all, i don't have oil in the water or water in the oil so don't think a head gasket problem,

Oh yeah the enging temp guage is on about a quater all the time, the guy i got it off (my next door neighbour) who had it from new, always had it serviced as he used it as his everyday run about he said the heaters used to work really well and the temp used to be on about half way, it was hardly used for about a year which is why he sold it,

I hope you are topping it up with a 50% antifreeze mix and not just plain water, as you will be diluting the antifreeze.

Loosing water,

1 You are either loosing it down the exhaust as steam ie head gasket gone,
2 You have a serious leak that should be very easy to spot as there will be Antifreeze coloured crystals around hoses, the rad or the internal heater matrix, on the engine block either through gaskets or the core plugs on the engine. These can corrode and cause a leak but very easy to replace.
3 there is an airlock that is eventually being cleared and so one day your heater will work!

4 The engine is overheating and water is being lost as stem via evaporation.

Is the water loss worse on long hot runs than lots of small short distance trips? If it's the same it won't be 4 above.

Try parking on a piece of cardboard and see what you get in the morning, and from where.

This is not the best time of year to be fixing these things, that's why my MOT is in the summer.

i just filled the radiator right up, drove about 25 miles and had a little bit of heat, i just had to refill the radiator it took just about 2ltrs, what could cause the water to be blown out all the time, abd when i opened the bonnet even before i turned the engine off the top hose and top of the radiator was hot but the bottom of the radiator and bottom hose was cold, any ideas please

water pump not working...

can be got of ebay about £50 - £60 ish..

not to hard to do, i did Simple Simons few weeks back

i fitted a new water pump a little while ago to try and sort it, would an air lock cause this much trouble, i thought that by pumping the pipes it should bleed it all out.

Thermostat or head gasket as well as an air lock or leaking heater matrix

What you could do is remove one of the heater hoses and flush water in througn the heater, but don't pressurise the system with water pressure, remove the rad cap and hope this gets some air out.

I have done this on my down stairs radiators when they are fed from above.

When I changed my anti freeze I didn't drain the block as the drain was difficult to get to, so I didn't suffer any air locks, but I did flush it and run the engine about 6 times, until the water came out clear.

Check your carpets in the car under the heater, they could be wet. Could be a faulty hose or clip.

sorry to hear about ur problems

sounds just like mine minus the bubbling side

on journeys under 30 miles over a week i had to top up about 3ltrs but then the bubbling started

I changed the thermostat today and tried it again, still dumping water so tried it without a thermostat it took ages to get any heat into the enging but again dumped water out the expansion bottle, it looks like a head gasket change is in order, what sort of job is it on the tdi and what sort of time scale are we looking at for a reasonable mechanic, just so i can work out when i can do it around my shifts.
Thanks everyone for your comments and help

Up till now only done Tds, but a day no problem, but we have come across 3 cracked heads, one we could see clearly the others it was not apparent till they were back up together, so bear that in mind Rick

cold Heater

Hi

Ive read all of this but none of it quite fits the problem. The Heater didnt warm up but the engine did. I checked the expansion tank and radiator and had to add about 1 ltr of coolant/antifreeze mix. Result all worked as before.
Next morning -8 Drove round trip of 60 miles checked expansion tank no coolant loss.

Today -15 Mrs C takes vehicle to work rings up after a couple of miles no heat. Heater is not working. she checks the expansion tank as above no loss of coolant. The temp guage reads as normal. I had been loosing about a pint of coolant over a 2 to 3 month period with no obvious leaks. Is the head gasket on its way out or can you suggest any other fault/remedies
cheers

Check for wet foot well carpet...

no heat

Checked the footwells tonite both ok. Started and ran for about 45 mins motor heats, heater pipes warm up and hey presto heater works.
The radiator header is still cold and the pipe to the top of the rad is cold the temp gauge is about 2 thirds to where it normally runs. Indicates the thermostat hasnt yet opened But the outside temp is -7

Could the thermostat be sticking open when the motor cools down at night after the drive home? or sticking open occasionally stopping the whole thing heating up??. Any suggestions as to the fault.

Cheers Centurion

Very unusual for a wax stat to stick open but I suppose it can happen, in your position I would change the stat, easy on the 2.7 not so easy on the 2.4 petrol, Rick
