i'm parking my Mav up this week and driving the Mazda. At the weekend, I intend to:

do the egr mod
change the fuel filter-tried once before couldnt loosen the damn filter, any tips?
Check all hoses to try source my slight running problem (odd puff of black smoke but clear when flooring it it seems)

do the mini filter if i have it. where would it be??

my fuel filter was a sod to get off too:( took the hole unit off and put the filter part in the vice then was able to get a good enough grip on the the rest of unit and i manage to get it undone!!:D hope this helps.

you say you took the whole unit off, what about the fuel pipes???

just undo the fuel pipe and take them off at the filter end.. and tie them up with a shoe lace i used to stop fuel coming out! simples:D then undo the 2 bolts holding the hole unit and their you are its off the car and then a lot easyer to undo the filter as you can get a grip on it:D

oh right i know what you mean, how much "leakage" can i expect, fnar....

not much at all just a little bit of fuel will come out till you tie the pipes up:thumb2 remember to fill the new filter with fuel befor you fit it as it saves on a lot of priming with priming pump on top of the filter unit:thumb2

oh yeah good point, i think i have a bit of deisel left in my jerry can...

also, i dont suppose you ever sussed out how to adjust your idle? i want to nip mine up just a wee bit...

I did mine exactly the way that sidsid did his, but I gently clamped the ends of the fuel pipes with a brake pipe clamp before taking them off.

Working on the filter in a vice is far easier and you get a good grip on it.

Good luck

Alan

yes i sorted my tick over as mine was a bit low!

i done it at the pedal end! as idle is electronic on mine! pain in ass whats wrong with a cable!

is yours cable or fly by wire? no cable!!!

if its cable can be done in the engine bay... as might be same sort of set up as my old nissan pick up and done that easy enough:D

I dunno mate, lets putit this way, i cant find a cabel in the engine bay!

how did you adjust it at the pedal? I can see some little elctrical box things up there but its hardly easy to get to!

if their is a cable at the pedal that gos in to a elctrical box thing as you say:)

i say yours is fly by wire no cable in engine!

if so i done mine this way:

the cable on mine and the plastic socket that cable connects to had worn.. so i made a small packer to go between ware

ball on the cable sit in the plastic cup on the top of the pedal ,so it will not come out as its under pressure..

it took a while to get the packer to the right width too much revs too high ect!!

if its too much the milf light will stay on must be a sensor some ware!

but mine ticks over fine now with the the small spacer in place:D

if try my way ! cut a slot in the item your going to use so you can get it over the cable with out taking things apart!

not sure if this is the way to ajust idle but it worked for me:thumbs and never cost a penny...... just time to get it just right

interesting, but i thought there was a little box thingy on the top of the pedal you somehow adjust (almost like a distributor) for the idle, its all very confusing! so unless it really is controlled by the ECU as others suggest, i've no idea! still, will do some investigations at the weekend...!!

yes it is controlled by the ecu the sender unit on the pedal let the ecu know what revs ect by the amount you press the pedal! try take a pic of what i done so you can see:thumbs may be of some help to you:)
