Hi guys and girls, newbie here looking for advice

well I'm contemplating the purchase of a Nissan Terrano Commercial for two reasons, one been the terrible weather which is apparently on it's way and the other for my tools and step's.

I like the look of them which is very important and the fuel is do able and not so important.

Looking for your help guys as in if there is a buying guide on here as to the more common issues that would pop up or even if you could advise me what to look out for, I seem to be a dab hand at buying motors with problems, trying to stop this trend

I have just checked out the section " bodywork " and it's not for pleasant reading......rust

Thanks :thumb2

Welcome!
I was in Glasgow but I'm now in N.I.
Guys are great on here.

Check rear body mounts & front ones, arches under the plastic is prone to rust....but we're great at getting folk into diy & saving these motors cos they're just brilliant

Hi mate, happy hunting, they are strangely addictive the motors, quite basic in design (the 2.7) and bullet proof also. The engine is gear driven so.no timing belt or chain to worry about, none or this dual mass flywheel diesel stiff either. They will run on veggie mix with no conversion (providing you have bosch set up)

A few things to look for when buying

Rust
Rust
Rust
Rust
Seat belt mounts rear arches
Front cross member
Front wings
Rust
Rust
Rust
Check window operation, regulators can fail
Rust
Leaks can often be a simple fix of 6 quid leak off pipes under intercoolerz sometimes looks like a hella leak.
Check.boot floor and lift carpet for... Yep you guessed it
Rust
Check for wet in boot too
Er... :lol

Once the rust is sorted they do make good strong 4x4's.
2.7 is reliable but nothing is bomb proof.
Suspension links and bushes, ball joints and have a look in the header tank for bubbles and sludge, if there's any walk away!!!

Seriously good motors apart from these things, plenty of back up and friends if you want them on this forum.

Woohoo another Scottish user :) Hi Scottish fwiend :lol Like said above really rust is an absolute killer! Other than that they are awesome and can run on veg :thumbs:lol Win win!

Did someone say Commercial :thumb2 :thumb2 :thumb2

Check out my Project Thread, the link is in my sig

Hi, check speedo and rev counter work properly too, my speedo gives a false reading and sticks, rev counter sticks after a while.
There is a company that repairs them for £150 I think, can be found on ebay.
I love mine, it does everything!

Is yours a digital dash? This seems to be a common problem on the earlier Mk4's which I think are usually fixed with a soldering iron,I'm sure there's a download somewhere for this but I can't find the link

Can someone else help with the link?

Thanks for the replies guys, right so let me get this straight I've to keep a look out for, what was it again :nenau :D

Hopefully might go to see one tomoz if not working to late, thanks for the welcome and all the information.

:)

Just purchased my 3rd Terrano. Its on a 52 plate. It seems to be very posh, compared to the other ones.It does have some minor issues. (Main one being the alarm going off when unlocking the truck). Not had much time to look into this problem as yet. Most likely battery plipper related. My point is this. The only people that under rate these trucks. Are those that have never owned one..

Welcome aboard and good luck with your purchase.

2.7 are pretty strong engines, no timing belt or chain as theyre gear driven. 3.0 are pretty good too but in my opinion not quite as good but wouldn't stop me owning one.

Anto roll bar links tend to wear out but easy and cheap fix front and rear.

Fuel pipes can leak above rear axle but replace with rubber front to back.

Injector leak off pipes can leak but a few quid to buy new.

As said rust can be a pain but not always a deal breaker. Edges of front wings under the plastic mouldings, get bubbling paint coming from the mouldings but its not particularly structural so a bit of gaffer tape over any holes and it passes mot (no sharp edges).
Sills, look for rust at the back just in front of rear wheels.
Being a commercial it won't have rear seats so no worries over rear seat belt mounts. These are in the rear wheel arch but not a difficult repair.
Lift any rear floor covers and check around the floor near wheel arches and also just in front of arches.
Front cross member, not chassis. This is a panel that the radiators sit on, you can make a new one that bolts on if it's got so far.

A lot of it is age related and what do you expect, there's plenty members had them for many years. Banshee has already said look at his project, well look at mine in my signature but when you see the rust as these are common spots think about how old it is.

When you buy one, change the filters are fluids especially the engine, gearbox and diff oils. Take car they are sensitive to the type of oils.

No need to worry about the snow, good set of boots and I have every confidence in my truck. Keep an eye on battery of course when it's cold but wouldn't you do that anyway.

A lot of it is common sense, look after the truck and it'll look after you.

Don't let 100 and odd thousand miles worry you either, as generally they don't seem to be too bad on higher mileage.

Good luck with your purchase.

Hi, yeh digital dash, I've been looking for some new stepper motors to fit to see if that sorts it but no luck so far.
If there is any info on this I would be very grateful, I'll do a forum search, don't know why I didn't think of that before :doh cheers buddy :thumb2

Welcome bud from another Scottish member with a Trol instead of a Terrano though :thumbs

Again I would like to thank everyone for all the information I need to source a Terrano, I have copied the ( with aid of a bic and some A4 ) information.

I ended up working later tonight than scheduled so I haven't made the trip to see it yet.

I must say there is a lot of love out there for this model and the Trol, I wasn't expecting such a nice welcome and the tons of information about what to look out for.

I have now taken the somewhat drastic action for me and spent all my future crimbo money on joining, just hope she dosen't notice !

The only problem being is the actual height is above 1800mm and the recycling center limit here is 1800mm, big tires though !

Again thanks for the welcome and hopefully I can contribute to this forum in return.

Well that's me organised a lift, so popping over tonight to have a wee look at one, I'll keep you's posted.
