My 1997 nissan terrano 2.7td is hesitant at around 1500-2000 rpm after that perfect, plenty of power and drives perfect on motorway, just at slow speed it seems jerky. The engine management light doesn’t come on. The injector pump is a zexel with brand new MAF sensor and the banjo bolt filter and spring is on the return line at the back of the pump and not on the inlet side. Any ideas anyone.

I think there is a download that cover changing the 'mini filter' which I rthink relates to running problems.

Hi, have found mine always like that, it's unhappy until it reaches 2000rpm or over then off it goes, I just use a lower gear, regards....bri

Does your model have EGR ? This kind of drivability issue is often due to excess EGR and/or sticking valve..

Thanks for your quick response. My model doesn't have the EGR and there isn't a mini filter in the injector pump inlet banjo bolt or inside the pump where the bolt goes but there is one in the banjo bolt at the back of the pump that goes to the return line and it is clean, it also has a ball and spring.Any clues please.

Thats an interesting one...Mine use to hesitate and pump out huge amounts of white smoke but that was purely down to the EGR sticking open. I also had issues when one of the earth wires for the injection pump and engine management broke off but that was causing major with it not running full stop so it wouldnt be that. Just out of curiosity, how many miles has yours done and when was the last time you changed the main fuel filter?

Approx 180000km. Filter last changed about 500km ago. Problem was there before filter change.

Hmmm, I'm a little bit stumped...the only thing I can think of that might not be functioning correctly is either the injection pump, but then it's not down on power, or the turbo which could possibly have 'something' making it lag more than normal or the injectors eg a poor spray pattern?? Anyone else want to second that...

Did you ever get anywhere with solving this problem, did you ever cure it, im exactly the same as you with the same type of parts as below. :nenau

No Adrian , I have not found a cure for my problem yet , was thinking maybe a power chip mod may fix the problem also a bit gutless off the mark.

Sorry to here about your truck messin about. I have just sold a ahogun sport that had been in all the garages and could not solve the same problem, Had new injectors egr valve pump serviced and still at 2000 it was hunting, got in touch with mits them self they told me that we have tried ten vehicles and they dont do this problem and we have tried ten others and they do,, but thats all they can say, But that is not the answer and its the same pump zexel, Been in this game along while and i dont care what anybody tells me but i say, And this is my thoughts it the pump they are a bad pump,if you do get it sorted let me know, good luck with it

mine is same and mine is in the gearbox as wrong oil I think or needs changing, wrong pressure and so selecting wrong gear, too low for engine torque

Thanks Zippy, Good thinking. Might be worth a go, although it happens in winter as well when motor is still fairly cold. I was driving to Brisbane through Moree ( heavily loaded ) three weeks ago where the temperature was 44 centigrade and the temp guage never went over normal. I was pleasantly surprised as I have read so much about these cars running hot under severe conditions. Seems to have the same problem hot or cold.I will fit a thermo fan and let you know the results.

Hi Tridexter, Have you found a solution to this problem? I have a simular problem going on (also a Zexel pump) Iam thinking its possibly the pump. Its spoilling what is otherwise a nice truck to drive. Have anyone else found a cure for this hesitation, jerkyness on a light throttle at certain revs? Tony.

had this problem with my truck a year 2000 terrano!! went to my diesel specialist who said had 1 in befor and could not find the problem!! ive had my head and hands in the engine many times to find that their was nothing wrong, mine is also 1 fitted without egr valve from factory!

i changed the maf sensor still the same! cough and smoke, worse when reved still! so i thought has to do with air fuel! so changed the air filter from the cheap 1 from ebay and bought a original nissan 1, also was running on supermarket diesel, changed to putting shell supper in its expensive! also put some fuel adative in ,and whent round every diesel pipe and connector on truck to make sure they had no air leaks, after all that she had no cough yes no cough what so ever! nore smoke mine used to do it at about 1800 revs! but still had a bit of a cough when stood still! but last week i managed to sort out the tickover it was slow! and the cable to the throttle sensor had a fair bit of sack to it! so took up the sack out of the cable and not even a cough when reved standing still!!!!!!!!!!:) so dont know which 1 of theis thing sorted my truck out!!! but she is a non coughing smoker now:D i now how the problem can drive you mad but dont give in .....as i seem to have sorted mine out......... hope that is of some help to you!!!! :thumbs
