hi. today i was driveing my 02 terrano 2.7 down the road when i got a huge wob shacking from stearing wheel. it felt like the wheels were going to come off, stoped the truck had a look at wheel nuts. all ok.got back in and drove home / all fine? takeing it in for garage to look at in the morning. wot do you guys think it could be? m any thanks/. ps hope it just something lose

Were you in 4 wheel drive per chance? If you were and on tarmac , it could just have been gearbox windup .

Check your steering ball joints and try shaking the front wheels side to side. You may need to jack the truck up a bit to take some load off the susp.
Strange it went away so quick though? Any chance you could have picked up some mud or maybe thrown a balance weight:nenau
What speed were you doing at the time and did you do that speed again after?

could be thrown a balance weight from wheel, did you try back @ 45? if it still does it simplest is wheels re-balanced - couple of ££ per wheel. worth a shot:thumb2

weights still on all wheels. when it happend i herd a knocking from under the truck and the wheels felt like they were coming off. slowed down and stoped. checked wheels and nuts were there.drove home at 30 -40 mph. no knocking or anything. maybe something lose? prop maybe? garage in morning

Had this on my old series 3 Landrover which used to violently shake the steering wheel. Turned out to be warped (out of round) tyres. The way to check is to jack up each front wheel a tiny bit off of the ground and then spin the wheel. You will have to be on the floor but you are looking for if the gap between the wheel and ground changes as the wheel goes around.

Good luck,
Ian.

Problem sounds very odd. What kind of tyres are you running on. Are you sure you didn't hit a rumble strip or some other kind of road marking? Did you actually check the wheel nuts as opposed to just looking at them? As has been suggested, try jacking it up and shaking the wheels see if ball joints are loose. Try pulling the stabiliser bar, steering linkage bits, shock absorbers etc. to see if anything seems loose. No harm in giving the steering wheel and colum a bit of a shake as well in case something is loose there rather than at your wheels. Let us know if you find out anything from the garage.
