I am looking in this font of knowledge to find the answer to my terrano problem. Sunday we were in London
300 miles from home, pulled away from parking and the car lurched, bumped and jumped then was ok.
Drove home the 300 miles and all ok.

Next morning drove off and within 40 m jump, bang lurch then a clicking noise, stopped then drove off ok.

The morning after drove half mile stopped at post office then as I drove away jump, bang lurch. Drove home ok, coasted down the hill all quiet.

Pasked at home and jacked up each wheel and all felt ok, smooth rroatating wheels.

Today set of for garage to pick up some wheels, within 40m thre it was again.

At the garage the my friend the owner took it a spin around the yard and it did it for him, he said it felt like a huge lump on the tyre.

We put it on the rolling road and it drove fine, put it on the ramps, found a lot of play in the drivers side
top ball joint, this was replaced but a spin around the yard and the problem is still there.

I thought of the auto hubs but they were not engaged but I did try 4x4 and that worked ok.

We are now considering the u/js and disconecting the front drive shaft, but I understand that would not be rotating in two wheel drive.

It is a big thump when it happens and can be felt in the car and heard from outside.

So friends WHAT is causing it. regards bri

my first thoughts are a problem with the LS rear diff, when you jacked it up could you spin one rear wheel? Rick

Sounds very like what happened to my T2 when the gearbox self-destructed. A thump felt through the car, then it would be ok again, sometimes for a day or so. Eventually had a close series of thumps and the car stopped. Had no drive and had to get the car recovered. Turned out a bearing had cracked and eventually fell apart in the gearbox, totally wrecking it, had to have gearbox rebuilt. Hope in your case that's not what it is!

Hi Ric, when I rotated one rear wheel the other one rotated the same way, we checked the ls oil in the rear diff.

The gearbox feels ok. I did on two occasions hear a clicking as I stopped after the lurch.

OK sounds like the diff could be OK, as said front shaft should not be turning in 2 wheel and if the front hubs were coming in when they should not there is no load on them anyway so should not make more than a clicking noise, take it you have checked the rear prop shaft? if OK then it looks like it could be the death throws of the box, but I would not rule out the rear diff completely, Rick

just an update. Trip to Asda this morning to get the xmas booze before the car gives up for ever. Going down the hill loud whirring sound like a stick in bike spokes, put out of gear and coasted noise still there then bump, all ok. Hope its not the gearbox has it will be fairwell terrano after seven years hello bus pass.

replacing could be expensive. being an optomist I feel it may be somthing more simple, I am trying to be logical and find some sort of pattern to this intermittent but alarming problem or I could thrash it up and down the hills till it destroys it's self. Thank you for your interest, bri

Is it a Manual or Autobox?

The problem with coasting is the gearbox is still being driven by the wheels, so all you are really doing is proving it is not the engine.

Not tried this on mine, so not sure if it is possible, it was on my Vitara, try shifting the transfer box into neutral instead of the gear box, as that will at least disconnect the main gearbox and prove if it is in the final drive area.

Hi again. went out for a thrash up the hills. started in 4x4 ran fine stopped put in 2x started and after a while the noise and bump came back. Back in 4x4 up the hills down the rough icy road, fine. back in 2x along the road and the loud clicking comes back, instead of stopping I decided to put it in 4x4 on the run, as soon has I touched the lever barely pulling it the the clicking stopped with a small clunk I dont think I pulled it far enough to engage 4h.

Now, could it be that front propshaft started to rotate and threw in a dithering manual hub or is it something in the transfer box? Or is it as suggested the gearbox which is disconected when the transfer lever is between drives?

More investigations tomorrow, can I drive the truck with the manual hubs removed? just to eliminate them.

regards bri

Sounds like the hubs if its clicking just take them off wont hurt only take the actual hub off not the circlip

u have auto hubs dont u, u can take brake rings out but have to put auto hub back on to stop dirt and and salt and water getting on to the bearings

That wont take the hubs out of the equation taking them off for a run down the road wont hurt

I will try that tomorrow but not convinced its them causing the noise. It is a very loud noise and the bump and bang feels very solid. thanks for your interest. bri

is this bang coming from front back or middle

feels like a brick gone under wheel then fast whizzing/clicking noise that increases with speed?
i think you will find one of the auto hubs is giving up, i will put money on it!

like already said - take them off, try it and hey presto no nasty noises?!

yep thats a good discription, bump, bang and wizing clicking sound, they shouldn't be driving in 2x but thats whats happening. Hope its a fine day tomorrow and I will whip them off. bri

well it looks as though you are correct. We had a long standing invite to a party last night which we didnt want to miss. It was a ten mile round trip down country roads and it was wet, so off we went in 4x4, ran as normal in 4X4 every thing ok. ( bit of a pig manoeuvring in 4x4 in a pitch black drive)

This morning took one hub off, run around ok, took other off then did a longer ride with lots of stop starts ok

You were correct Mr Breaker, one of the hubs looks very sad, dry, smells and black looking also appears to be permanently engaged as the gears are out and it wont rotate in the carrier like the normal looking one.

So I am looking for a SPARE AUTO HUB THAT WORKS anyone got one?

regards bri. p.s. also need the two washers that are behind the circlip on the car hub next to the wheel bearing locking plate
