help please

Hi Guys new here and new to all this 4x4 malarky. I have aproblem i hope you can help diagnose. This morning coming to work the clutch pedal is nearly on the floor before it bites. So getting gears is a bit of a problem Does this mean a new clutch? and is this the major job i think it is? or might it be something easier (cheaper). Its an N reg maverick by the way.

Could be clutch itself but is often te flexible pipe on these trucks leaking. Check your clutch fluid level too.

Yea have the clutch line checked, i had similar problem recently it was the line leaking.

hi guys thanks for the quick response, just had a look and can't see any leaks although i can't get underneath as im at work and it's peeing down, but it all looks ok. So does this point to the clutch being buggered?

Did you look under the bonnett first to see if you have enough clutch fluid. I had this problem when fluid was low. However, fluid was low because fluid line underneath was leading. The leak was not always visible when parked and it was when using the clutch when driving that the fluid used to leak. There was signs of the fluid on the underside of the jeep but it was not dripping onto the ground. I also had the clutch pedal spring adjusted as it there was no great resistance on the pedal going down or up.

hi, yes i checked the fluid in the reservoir, i assume it's the one at the top of the engine bay l/h side next to the servo and its full. Also had the torch out and checked the flexible pipe from above and it was dry. Will have a look at the weekend and get underneath, just gotta get it home through rush hour tonight :doh. Had a couple of quotes for a new clutch, cheapest £300 dearest £740!!!!!!! so it looks like it might be on the sidelines for a few weeks

ok it died on the way home the pedal was on the floor and when in gear the clutch was still engaged so it was creeping forward!! Almost impossible to change in or out of gear. The pedal feels really loose like no resistance. The recovery guy seemed to think the slave cylinder was the culprit, do any of you guys know if this sounds right. i dont want to shell out for a clutch when its something like that, that i can do myself. Any advise much appreciated

sounds about right.

no fluid = shot pipe or slave cylinder.

i would be worried if i had a full reservoir of fluid and no clutch

I'm no expert but from my experience paulp seems to make a lot of sense. When I had similar problem it was very obvious that fluid was disappearing from the resevoir and had to be topped up constantly. And when I topped it up again all went fine until fluid was low again. In my case the clutch pedal would not come back up on its own when fluid was low and I had to lift it back up with my foot. So if it's not fluid related in your case it would seem to be mechanical so paulp's solution is probably a good next likely cause to look at.

I had exactly the same problem with a previous vehicle---no loss of fluid but clutch would not operate correctly. Turned out to be fluid leaking past piston in slave cylinder . Fluid did not leak visibly---simply passed back to reservoir---hence' no fluid loss but no clutch operation to speak of.
New slave cylinder cured problem. Good luck.

hi it has already been answered - slave cylinder passing by and losing pressure at the piston or may need bleeding or fluid change.

the slave cylinder is not a fortune, so i would do all three.

woo hoo, changed the slave cylinder and bled the system and we're back in business. Bit of a fiddle getting the flexible hose off the old cylinder but all good now :thumbs just gotta keep an eye on the fluid for any leaks but so far so good. Also cleaned out the sunroof drains, didnt seem that blocked so all the rain forecast should let me know if that worked or not Thanks for all the advice guys appreciate it :clap
