Hi have just replaced the gear box on my 3.0 di and clutch this is not the problem ,after getting it back on the road the car will not pull, it is as if it is strangled I have checked all the turbo pipes and small sensor pipes but this has not made any difference is it a case that the turbo has gone or is there a sensor which needs to be replaced all your thoughts will be appreciated

Does it feel as if it's holding back under acceleration? Could be fuel starvation

Hi and sorry not had time to look it up, but is yours the common rail version with electronic injectors, If so I will have to bail out as have no experience of these at all, Rick

Hi no its di (direct injection ) it does hold back and there is little or no boost .

Check the Intercooler hoses for starters, I've had similar with the Terrano when one of my hoses was split and gives same symptoms, do you get an engine light appear on the dash?

You can access any fault codes stored on the truck by using a paperclip in the consult port if it has one, given the age of your vehicle I would bet you have the 16 pin interface. The plug will be grey and below where the fusebox is in the drivers footwell.

Report back I'll talk you through how to access the codes

Hi no lights on the dash it does have the 16 pin socket

What you want to do then is get a paper clip, have a look at the picture below you'll want to bridge the 2 end pins on the bottom row, when you've done that switch the ignition on and the eml light will flash on the dash, you'll then need to do a bit of maths.

A long flash = 10
A short flash = 1

Here's the list to interpret what codes you have stored;

If you get 55 all is good and you have no codes stored :thumb2

Hi sorry I have not replied to all the posts been away ,right I have taken the car to a diesel specialist but they could not get it to connect to a plugin scan tool but he told me of a problem that he had encountered which was to do with a Nissan truck they were having problems with the engine as it would not boost but in two gears (3-4) after some time they discovered that it was the neutral switch when in neutral the car will not boost but when in gear it will due to the switch being off but when in 3rd or 4th it was on and the engine would not boost ,as I left and on the way to another garage which I knew would have a scan tool which would read the car I climbed a hill in 4th gear the car just would not pull at all at 40 mph so I changed it to 5th and by the time I had reached the crest of the hill I was doing over 70 mph ,tried it again and it did the same in 1st and 2nd it pulled well but on listening to the car with the window down in 1st 2nd and 5th you could hear the turbo boost in 3rd and 4th nothing .On arriving at this other garage the owner had a rep selling diagnostic tools and he was confident that he would be able to read the car ,sure enough he was able to read the engine , and gear box he asked me to engage 1st neutral switch off the same in 2nd and 5th ,but 3rd and 4th it was on so its the switch on the gear box ,as I have the old box which has a good working switch on it it will be replaced and hopefully it will be back to normal .Many thanks for your help Phil.

if you use ecutalk you will see in the list neutral switch, (not sure what it is labeled as, NS I think but could be wrong) anyway it registers on the read outs on all motors including Petrol, Rick

Wont work Rick, he has a late 3 litre which will be the 16 Pin plug, ECUTalk wont talk to it :(

OK but any of the later fault code readers should work, I forgot I have a Toughbook with Delphi on it, Rick

Yep but will have to be ODB2 reader as I've yet to see a 16 PIN vehicle work over the Consult protocol :(

Had the same problem on my truck last year, the neutral position switch is a simple plunger and mine had a worn/flat spot on it and if you kept forward pressure on the gear stick the truck would pull like a train and if you didnt it was flat. Im the same as you no one could diagnose it so i ended up at a local diesel specialist who cracked it in less than an hour. The switch is a bit of a pig to get at and i found it easier to go from the top through the gear shift gator. Best of luck

I have not had time to change it yet (work and the like ) but I wonder if this is a bit like the V.W. issue with emissions because when the car is tested its in neutral the car will not boost and fuel will be reduced just a thought .

Mine passed its MOT with the faulty switch.

It would because with the switch on the cars emissions would be low as the car will not boost and the ecu will not send the amount of fuel when it boosts ,if the cars switch was on all the time ( when in gear and neutral ) I think the emissions would be a lot higher .

would not make any difference you cannot get it to boost off load no matter what you do, Rick

The fueling may be higher ,I use to have a G Wagen which had a 2.5 td engine in it but we use to have problems getting it through the test with emissions the nissan may be different .

Just changed the switch all back to normal ,just a thought if the car was tested for emissions with it in neutral and then in gear with the clutch on I wonder what the difference would be ?
