Hello.

Im looking to buy my first 4x4, for quite a while I had toyed with a SWB Frontera as being adequate for my means:
  • Able to tow 1800kgs
  • Able to seat 5 on occasion
  • Able to venture off road and have a bit of fun occasionally
  • Able to get me to work in the snow/Biblical floods
However having driven the petrol one I was distinctly underwhelmed at the lack of power it had and really feel that in the towing stakes I would struggle.

Ive had a Nissan now for the best part of 7 years, two K11 MicraShed's which have been thoroughly reliable (except rust) & a N10 Cherry, and this has prompted me to look at the Terrano. It seems to tick all the boxes and the TD27 engine seems both strong and full of torque which when trying to shift 1700Kgs of caravan down the M6.

So, the question is, LWB or SWB - I really have no need of something so big as the LWB, but so far have been hard pushed to find a reasonable SWB within my price range (sub 2K) that wasnt going frilly.

So Hello. And have an arty shot of the Cherry...
Nissan 50th Anniversary

Welcome.

Dont.forget to check cor running on vegvie oil, bosh maf and pump.

Lwb, all day long mate. The extra room is great.

Oh wow an N10, long time since I've heard of those. I'd have one tomorrow if there was any around these days. LWB is better for towing or so people tell me but SWB is better off road. There's one of the members selling a SWB Maverick. Defo a good choose of motor, course they have their faults just like any car but still far nicer than a lot of cars.

Haha welcome sir! Biblical floods i love it :lol

I had the old swb petrol frontera and yes seriously underpowered and about as heavy on fuel as a patrol :doh

The lwb terranos are ace, I partially chose terrano because it is gear driven (no chain or belt ect) and single mass flywheel :D

Lwb has loads of room, 7 seats or serious lux space for 5 passengers and a huge boot :thumb2

I have 5 of my 7 seats up with the 3rd row folded up and a sub in the rear with my winch too :thumb2

Ace motors!!

Edit: oh and it runs on veg, enough said.

I hope that winch is well strapped down Alex, wouldn't want that thing flying about in an accident or roll over- god forbid mate.

Cheers and thank you for the welcome.

Im sort of leaning towards the SWB on the grounds that I already have an MPV for lugging the kids about in, and if I bought a 7 seater I think the missus would rob it off me.
There is a tidy LWB near to where I live, and a nice looking SWB in Warrington both on Autotrader at the mo. I did notice the Maverick elsewhere in the forum. I'll sort out becoming a full member then

a) I can see all the pictures and
b) I can see the for sale section.

Its an N12 isnt it?:doh I am such an arse with Vehicle codes...

Yeah winch is secure :thumb2

And not sure on the n12 code? Someone will be on to comment no doubt.

Unless your gonna do manic off-roading I suggest getting the lwb, it just ticks more boxes. Your call though, the swb is a beauty and will not get stuck on mounds as easy ect.

Can you send a link to anything your looking for?

Just keep a really good eye out for rust, people keep coming on here after buying one they think was a steal to find out it had hidden rust. Check boot floor too as the rear doors can leak, and pull carpet up and check there for rust also :thumb2

Yep soon as I saw it I thought N12, is it the E13 or E15. The E15T was ace lol. Now I've lost everyone.

I could be really geeky an say it's got maxima wheel trims and before anyone says it maxima was the spec.

Alex N12 was the type of car like R20 is ours.

So - these are the two that I have been considering - Contender number 1 is in Warrington(ish) and just under two bags.

And much closer to home, but much more expensive is this longer wheel base one and two and a half bags...

This one is floating my boat for some unknown reason despite being the wrong colour, the wrong spec, the wrong wheelbase and not having a towbar already....

So, any thoughts?

Apart from wings and rear wheel arches, where should I be poking for rusty bits?

Sills boot floor, rear seat belt Anchor points.

Front body mounts below head lights, inner fills and on some chassis rust, typically the round tube that accross jjust in front of the rear axle, Rick

Front bumper support and crossmember where the rad sits on , inner front wings around master cylinder

Typically older models are best 1993 was a good year much better build ie less rust stronger axle no abs to worry about no fly by wire= no problems:thumbs

I like the Terrano so much i have just purchased a second one.

The model was imported from Japan as as Maxima spec but Nissan UK as they were known were good at rebadging. It was a nightmare getting correct wheel trims, decals and things like that. Made worse in 1991 when Nissan Japan did not renew the contract with Nissan UK and started Nissan Motor GB. I won't bore you anymore with the geeky rubbish.
