Thanks to both of you for the reply
It sounded more like a grinding noise which went away as I slowed down but came back over 40. and was still there when I knoked it out of gear

Thanks for the info on 4 wheel drive.
On the way home it seemed to have cleared .
off to work again will see if it does it again. The driver side hub did get hot with smoke comming from it after a long trip before it went back to the garage we thought that was the brakes binding. trouble is I only work 4 miles from home so only a 10 min trip. I will strip the hubs again at the weekend and have another look  Looking to replace them with manuals when money allows. -cheers-
Will I damage them driving it until I can look at it again :?:

You'll probably be OK for short trips if it is the hub or hubs causing your problem. Sorry I'm out of ideas about your grinding noise.

hubs

i read an old post on here about putting a bit of engine oil in the hubs to free up all the components inside.it is possible that the guys at the garage could have put too much grease in them thus not letting them release properly.they do need grease but not exessive amounts.

p.s parts being posted in the morning

I had a sticky auto hub & after putting a drop of engine oil in then i've not had the prob again but the only way I could free it at the time was to reverse hard with a bit of a jolt

9 PAges WILLOW..

are you sure it was worth it...

hello from sunny nolfolk

hi wendy .
the noise you discribe can also be down to cold weather and thick oil in transfere box .the noise you get then is a meshing /grating noise "bit like the fergie when you cannot get it to go in gear".
if you stop the noise stops.set off again and its still there drop into 4h and take your time especialy around bends ,drive for a mile drop back into 2 high , noise should be gone due to oil warming up .
next time you reverse it will unlock your hubs.
if this does cure the problem just continue to do same on cold mornings or change transfere gearbox oil for synthetic "it dont thicken up as much"
i never bothered just used the above procedure ok for 3 winters.
IF THIS ISNT THE PROBLEM JUST DO AS JIM SAID run in 4h to lock the hubs in then drop into 2h hubs will be locked but front axle will not be connected ,IT WONT DO ANY DAMAGE.
it will melt the grease in the hubs and free the hubs off .
just give it time.

Thanks everyone
Sorry to take up so many pages yes I think it will be worth it and yes I do like the terrano and do not want to give up yet.
I am tempted to just fit manual hubs when the money allows
Will try the oil and all sugestions thanks again
Wendy

Ok Ian
If this is the problem would it make the auto hubs hot :?:
It was still doing it today and the hubs got quite hot :?:
Its a shame because it works ok in 4 wheel drive.
Thanks

hello from sunny nolfolk

HI WENDY IF THE HUBS ARE GETTING HOT THEN THE PROBLEM I DISCRIBED IS NOT THE CAUSE.
hot hubs are down to hubs sticking or wheel bearings to right/loose
the snap rings are not clearing properly half engaged .
did the garage compleatly strip the hubs out or just clean them up and free them off. if so try the engine oil in the hubs trick only takes 15 mins to do the job.
(just undue the allen bolts pull the hub off tip egg cup full of engine oil into hub put it back on drive about for a few days if hub is hot its more difficult to disengage so wait till its cold put it in reverse give it some revs drop the clutch "snatch" reverse a few yards then do same forwards ,backwards ,for.......s get the idea. just get the hubs engaging /dis engaging .
JUST A THOUGHT BUT MAKE SURE BRAKE ISNT BINDING AND MAKING HUB HOT.

Be carefull running in 4wd on any hard surface, you'll notice the steering become very heavy and heavier still as the tension winds up in the axles.

I'm convinced it is still your hubs causing the trouble, doing a proper strip and clean with a light coat of grease may cure it.

Ian is quite right about the transfer box oil becoming thicker and causing drag which effectively makes it 4wd. I changed mine to synthetic oil which does not tend to get as thick at lower temps but now with manual hubs the problem caused went away anyway.

PS would rather see a 9 page thread helping someone any day of the week.

Willow,

Keep it going so far as you gain benefit.

As long as you get a fully functional truck at the end - that's what counts
