Hi all.
Thought I'd say a quick hello as I'm planning to pick up my Terrano at the weekend :D .It's going to be a 3rd family car as I drive an (oldish) E Class Merc during the week and my wife a (much newer) A Class. It'll be something to transport us through the snowy Peak District winters, explore a few of our local green lanes, occasionaly tow a caravan & be general weekend/playday transport.

I've been browsing the classifieds for a Discovery for sometime and had a look at a few. Many I saw around my budget (£1-2K) looked pretty rotten and I worried they'd become money pits. So I cast an eye round some alternatives - Daihatsu Fourtraks looked good, wasn't keen on the Shoguns, & then discovered the Terrano 2s. I'd spotted a couple of 3 door ones till the 'boss' said I should find a 5 door/7 seater. So I did & test drove it this afternoon.

I plan to pick her up at the weekend. She's a 2.7 diesel, lwb touring on a '99 V plate, leather seats (seems quite rare & whilst I wasn't looking for them, I'm not complaining!), dark green & silver, 90k miles. It's a private sale & she is due a service (any idea how much I should expect to pay?). I'm paying a touch over £2k, does that sound fair?

I'd love to hear your opinions/comments. I expect I'll become a regular visitor here very quickly! Will be stumping up for full membership the moment the car's on the drive.

Thanks to all

Ian

Hi Ian,

the new Terrano sounds great, seems a good buy to me for the money. You certainly get a better car compared to the Discovery-not that there is much wrong with a Discovery. I used to have a Fourtrak, SWB, and you made a wise decision buying the Terrano, partly because a Fourtrak really IS a farmers vehicle, not great on the road at all, but amazing off road! Superb pulling power, and just stupidly reliable. The only reason I went from Fourtrak to Maverick, is because the Fourtrak was scary to drive on the road, especialy over 50, I found the Maverick had the same expertese as the fourtrak, but MUCH better on the road!

I havent had much use out of my Maverick, but did use it to pull our small caravan from Machester to Huddersfield and it did so effortlesly-you really couldnt tell it was towing!

Well, good luck with the new Terrano, I know its silly as we all have the same thing, but some pics would be lovely!

have fun!

Thats a fair price if its in OK nick.

Decent service will be £250-£300. Get them to change the rear axle oil (making sure they use only the proper LSD oil, lots of threads on here but Comma is a good one to use).

Other than that it a case of driving it to see what the usual snagging items are - rarely anything too serious.

Welcome to the looneybin!:thumbs

Hi there Ian, spend yourself a tenner and become a full member, believe me it is money well spent, oh and welcome to the site. :thumb2

Ian when youve spent your £10 joining look in the downloads and the search section and you will be able to service the Terrano yourself and of course save ££££££££££££s, its a great site ive allready had more than my moneys worth.

Thank you all for such a great welcome! I can see this forum is going to be very useful.

Hi, Ian! Nice, clean looking truck you've got there! :thumb2 Like the chrome mirrors. Welcome to the site. :clap

Thank you for the nice comments. :)
Can I ask you guys a quick question?
What's the best way to check the 4wd works correctly (I'd like to confirm this before I drive the truck away on Saturday), I won't really get a chance to try it across a muddy field or anything...
Thanks again.
Ian

put in to 4wd low, try to turn on full lock..

if its hard, then all is working..

Going round derbyshire this weekend with Responce group greenlaning.so if you see a 51 plate t2 with some landy,s give us a wave.

Welcome ian all the best with the new truck. They do what it says on the tin :thumbs

I will indeed! If I'm driving a green & silver Terrano you'll know who I am but if someone in a silver Mercedes saloon waves, that's probably me too!

I'm planning to try some easy greenlanes in mine once I've got it... hoping someone might show me the ropes...... (?)...

Just as Zippy says.

You are only supposed to use 4WD in slippery conditions; if you engage it on dry tarmac and try a tight forward or reverse turn you'll feel the transmission wind up and the tyres scrubbing - its very obvious compared to 2WD. If it does that then 4WD is OK. To disengage you just put lever back to 2WD and on that MkII just reverse a few metres in a straight line and the little green light on the dash goes out.

Good luck, hope it goes well.

Cheers for the advice on checkig the 4WD. Are problems engaging this (or the low box) common? If there are issues are they generally an easy fix?

should all be ok, but if not its normaly the auto hubs, get MANUAL ones fitted if you can

yes, get manual hubs fitted then you can climb out of the truck in the pissing rain and mud and grovel in a puddle while you turn them on LMAO!

NOT!!
