What have I missed ? why are you removing the steering wheel ?

Bob

no just remove the covers where the stalks stick out yhen they just clip out

Whoops nearly had the wheel off:lol right just whipped the switch and run the old eyes and multimeter over it and it all seems to be working correctly  i get a continuity reading when its on low beam on what i think are the right bits (although i am crap at lectrics so could be wrong) but from what i can see theres not much can go wrong with these as they are all solid bits of metal inside. Could it still be dodgy? I dont want to shell out for a switch only to find its no different cos money a bit tight at the mo.
cheers

Did you check that you have power at the bulb holder itself at the slot in the connector for the dip beams when you have the switch switched to dip beams. If you have power at that slot when switch is turned to dip beams and no power when switch is off dip beams I would have thought your switch would seem ok.

im not getting any juice through on dip beam, but ive just got to narrow it down to wiring, relay, bulb or switch. I have eliminated the bulb and the relay (i have only one and only one side is working even when i swap the relays. So that leaves wiring or switch. The wiring is going to be a pain as its all in the loom, but i cant seem to find anything wrong with the switch although that doesn't mean it's not buggered. I guess im gonna have to bite the bullet and get a new one to at least eliminate that.

if you can just run a temp wire from switch to bulb. if it works its wiring, if not its teh switch..

as the mearcat says....

SIMPLES

I wonder if Sir Zippy or anyone has a manual for the 95 model ?. The disc I have is for the fly by wire models, and that shows 2 relays. if we could have a look at one for an earlier model we may be able to help.

ooh sir now is it.. i like that...

um nope, but ill have agid, see what i can find..

hi fellas has anyone got a wiring diagram for 1996 terrano/mav as this bloody lights driving me mad, im pretty sure its the switch but on inspection it all seems ok. but when i put it back it still doesnt work. if i run a wire from the bulb to the wire for the other light at the switch it works so im pretty sure it is the switch might have to bodge a wire in to take the feed from the other circuit not sure how succesful that will be as it might overload it.

If your botching a wire from another circuit put a relay and a fuse inline. Relays take little power so shouldn't over load.

Have a look at your connections on the 3 pin plug which the bulbs plug into and see if you get any power there.
Check where the wires are soldered or clip on to the connection, not down the slots, often the wire is corroded or has not getting a good connection.

Then check on the switch sold of the relay and then work your way back with a volt meter to the switch.

I know this sounds like starting again but it might help just in case you have missed something in the process.

my idea of bodging a wire didnt work, i cant seem to locate the connection for the dip beam and if i run a wire direct to the bulb all i get is the min beam ! If i go dirsct to the battery the dip works so i know the bulbs ok. The passenger side works fine so the relay (it only has one) is working ok just no juice getting from the switch to the light  will have to give in and get a new switch if only to eliminate that. Blimey give me wood and metal any day of the week at least you can see whats going on!

If the relay for the passenger side is working and you only have the one relay then the problem must between the join on the relay to the the drivers side connection at the bulb.

Have you tried running wires from the relay to the bulb on the drivers side?

Not tried that, does that mean that the switch operates both lights from one connection?

Possibly.
If one set of lights (passenger side) are working then it possible that the relay might be at fault pending on the type, or the wiring.

In a simple basic system, the power goes from the battery to the on/off switch.
When turned on the power goes through the dip switch (dips both lights),and then to the relay then to both head lights at the same time.

Without complicating things:

Some loop the headlights from the relay to say the passengers side then to the drivers sides via the passengers side wiring.

And some have a relay with a wire to the passengers and another separate wire two the drivers which is the preferred way or two relays.

Without complicating things further it might be the earth instead of the power pending on how they are wired, but don't worry about that at this stage.

Lets see if we can get power from the relay to the bulb.

If I have missed something I'm sure someone will advise. :)

Blimey who'd o thought a bit of leccy could get so complicated  Hopefully i can get the truck into the garage tonight (wifey had a day off tidying/hiding my tools) so will run a wire from the relay back up front see if that works. I did try another relay but thast made no difference.
