Hi there, my terrano has turned poorly, for a couple of weeks it would intermittantly cut out, by pulling over and leaving it a couple of mins it would fire back into life again.
until.... It cut out after about a 40mile journey and wouldnt restart again! I could get it to fire if i feathered the throttle but not start.
I had to get it recovered home, and I ordered a crank sensor that night without even looking at it! (stupid i know) I put it on and the truck will now start and run if i hold the throttle down but as soon as it returns to idle it will cut out straight away!
Ive taken off the stop solenoid and tested, which is fine,
I got a scary feeling that the advance solenoid may be at fault, as when the truck is allowed to cut out the solenoid will buzz until the ignition is switched off and back on again. (the truck will not restart unless ign is off-on-)
on 1 of the wires to the advance solenoid i get 12v, the other flutuates from 7v upto 13v depending on how hard i rev the engine.
ANY help would be very gratfully recieved! Many thanks in advance matt

b4 you do anything see if you have a mini filter fitted in the banjo union on the feed to the injector pump.

I assume you had the MIL on then, so can you read the codes?
That should narrow down the search :thumbs

Off the top of my head I can't remember dtc's, but I had 2 Nissan codes, one was no 6 injector open circuit! (which I just ignored) and the 2nd was a fuel shut off valve fault. I listened to a mates terrano today, when he turns his engine off, he gets a buzz from fuel advance solenoid for about 3 seconds...... My terrano will make this noise non stop with the ign on.
Does anyone know exactly what the advance solenoid does and wether it sends info to the ecu or recieves it?
Many thanks matt

As for the fuel line idea, I replaced all my fuel lines a while ago as they was sucking air, also it will run faultless on higher revs, but the second I lower it to around 1000rpm it will just cut out, as if I'd just turned the key off, as in it doesn't bog or struggle if that makes sense?
Thanks matt

It receives data from ecu if it`s buzzin it`s poorly, there is all the info needed in the manual regarding this item, sorry don`t know the exact page, but once you find it it explains how to check. check out briggies posts for manual d/loads

Thats how mine ran but a new diesel pump sorted that:eek:.I could drive it ok but if i took my foot off to stop it would just cut out.turn off key re start no prob.if i sat stationary revved up to 3/4 k let foot off it just stopped.top positioner was shot and it was clogged up with wvo.

Just a thought...
It could be fuel related as the advance solenoid requires fuel pressure within the IP to be at a suitably high pressure to operate the advance cam.
If the IP is only getting a restricted fuel supply it will struggle to operate.

Hi, just to let you all know, I wanted to take the advance solenoid off to test (what a b*****d to get too) to bench test it as i scoped the signal from the ecu and i was getting a nice pulse signal.
But i broke the end off the solenoid trying to get it out, so I ordered a new one directly from bosch (nissan couldn't supply it seperate from the pump!!) have just finished putting her back together and shes back to normal! :0)
Might be worth looking out for in the future, my symptoms over the last few weeks was, intermittant complete loss of power, sometimes it would sort itself out, sometimes you would have to switch ign off then on, and sometimes you had to let it cut out, wait a few mins and re start.
when it gave up the ghost completely the solenoid would constantly 'buzz'
now with a new solenoid it will only buzz for about 3secs only when you turn the ignition off (my mates terrano also des this)

Thanks for all your help on this one guys

FWIW - a 2-3 second buzz at switch off is normal behaviour for the Bosch pump TDI.
