I have a 2003 model with the double size cassette radio (I can't believe they were still putting cassettes in cars so late - cheap skates!)

I am replacing the facia unit and fitting it back with a single bluetooth unit, 3 extra cigar lighter sockets, a USB charger and hopefully the hazard switch.

The unit has two connectors that plug into the back of the cassette player.

Please can someone confirm if one of them is for the hazard switch?

It has five wires as I thought a hazard switch would only need 3 (In, out and light)

Also will a generic hazard switch off ebay have the same plug in or would I have to cut off the plug and solder new wires to the new switch?

Thanks

On my 52 reg its just a normally open contact across the green/red wire and black wire, does your switch light up as mine was solid plastic.

By the way be carefull as mine wasnt actually double din it was about 98mm.

Ok I've done some further testing tonight.

I can confirm that on the double din units (with the hazard switch built into the facia) one of the plugs with 5 wires is indeed the hazard switch.

I dismantled the cassette unit hoping to be able to remove the hazard switch and re-fit it in my new panel, however this will be impossible as the switch connects to the main circuit board and then re-connect to the plug. Simply put, there are no wire that go from the hazard switch to the socket.
What I propose to do next is to cut off the hazard switch socket in the car and solder the wires direct to a replacement generic switch.

The question is, does anyone know how to successfully wire a hazard switch?

As in my previous post, if its the same as mine you just need to put a normally open switch between the green/red and the black wire on the small plug, you could even use scotch locks if you dont want to cut the original wiring.

sure have seen, a replacement facia, with a hazard switch and a single din
slot beneath.

there was an image on here, think lacoupade? did some reseach as owned
both mk3 and 4 terranos.

maybe seen on ebay too, though not cheap, suspect available from nissan
as seems to be what my mk4 has.

my hazard is pretty large, must use the centre third of the area above the ice.

have toyed with either new switches either side or more power sockets, and a
slave hazard switch else where on dash, say near indicators in case original is
fouled by a touch screen from a replacement head unit.

any thoughts on whether the hazards would be ok with 2 live switches, thinking
akin to a 2 way lighting circuit? as found in staircases??

To turn the hazard warning on it only needs the green/red wire on the hazard switch connecting to ground.

Thanks for this information. It will make wiring up a replacement easier.

Can any MOT person tell me if it is a requirement for the Hazard switch to light up when you switch your lights on? If not I won't bother.

My current one does.

The hazard warning lamp ‘tell tale’ may be a separate light or the same as the indicator ‘tell-tale. However, it must be a flashing light.

Reason for failure:
A hazard warning device:
a. not fitted
b. inoperative
c. operated by more than one switch
d. switch missing, insecure or faulty
e. ‘tell-tale’ not working correctly
f. does not cause all the direction indicators to flash simultaneously, with the ignition both on and off.

So as long as the dash indicator tel tale works then no need for a separate hazard tel tale.

surely both indicators clicking and lighting up on the dash is enough

Also the switch MUST be clearly marked as per it's function.
You should be able to get an image off the internet, print it on paper, cut it out and use clear tape to stick it down.

so would that be game over for me on c, or does that mean another switch which in turn had another function, like whilst silly coming on with main beam??

May be a bit of a grey area me thinks,...
The hazards on my Octavia came on all on there own when I got rear ended by a fully loaded 38 Ton Scania tipper and I sure as hell did not switch them on. I was stationary at red lights in neutral, the engine along with the radio was switched off too!
SO.... there is another "switch" as fitted by VAG, even though you cant see it! Apparently turned on by the same impact sensors that decide to deploy the air bags, or not, and no, the air bags were not deployed.

Definition of an:
electrical switch - control consisting of a mechanical or electrical or electronic device for making or breaking or changing the connections in a circuit

So on that basis VAG (and probably others) are producing vehicles that may be non compliant, on the basis that there is more than one "switch" capable of turning the hazard warning lights on.
You decide.....

canbus aided? thinking about 10 years ago firm drove for had dennis
plaxton buses, had a system where if sensed brake lights had failed
would operate fogs instead.

be a bit silly that if added second hazard because first was obscured
would then be a fail, but like idea of big centre hazard switch as
accessible to front passenger?

and retains factory spec

so.......... MOT testers may not be CAN bus aware!
It is after all still a switch.

suppose could remove for test, but means that then is fiddling between
tests, giving insurer griounds not to pay out in event pf an inspection
or claim.

hink would have a word with friendly tester, after all is building his own
rr vogue to series hybrid, so must know score.

help needed!!!!!

just been reading through this post as i have just replaced my stereo so i now need to wire in a hazard light switch.
looks simple enough i thought until i looked at my plug and wires.
i have a 2000 x reg terrano and my plug only has 4 wires.
does any body know which wires i need to wire in a switch?
