Hi guys

I have a problem with my brakes the pedal is so hard when I brake it doesnt feel like the truck is going to stop!
I
've replaced the 2 rear wheel cylinders bleed the brakes out with new fluid to no avail.

When the truck is switched off the pedal is hard and if I keep my foot on the pedal and start it the pedal goes down a little way.

The pedal doesn't seem to go down very far at all when braking but I have put up with it since I bought it 18 months ago coz its my weekend truck but I'm looking at using it a little more for touring and off roading so need the problem sorting any ideas or help would (great.

It has abs and the abs dash light always goes out and never flashs on when braking.

think you need to be looking at the servo and or vacuum, there are two types of vacuum pump one on the alternator and one under the fuel pump first pul the pipe from the pump and check it is working OK a vacuum gauge is best, if ok then check all the vac pipes not just the one to the servo but all the others as well as the amount (volume) of vacuum produced is small and any leaks will drop the efficiency dramatically, Rick

Poor brakes

I had a similar issue with my Terrano R3mR luckily my model has a brake booster warning light and that used to flash on briefly when braking especially in stop start traffic.

In my case it was a couple of perished vacuum hoses so I replaced all of them from the pump to the vacuum tank and from the vacuum tank up to the servo. There were over ten seperate hoses in all and that sorted it.

Another thing that helped was getting different brake pads.
I found TWR brake pads much better than the Nissan ones making the pedal effort so much lighter.

.

Thanks for the replies guys my model doesn't have a pump on the back of the alternator so I guess I have the one under the fuel pump ? Is it easy to get to and which pipe do I start with ? Would I need to change all the vaccum hoses even the small ones ? Like the boost one too the turbo and where is the best place to get replacement vaccum hoses ?

I would start where the hoses are exposed to the most heat near the engine, manifold etc.
I purchased my hoses on e-bay as dealer parts were crazy money. I used a couple of suppliers one is the link below.

terrano/maverick brakes

hi try the front calipers you will probably find the sliders are seized in the carriers :thumb2

hard brakes

Easy test to check if its a servo / vacuum issue.

Disconnect the vacuum connection at the servo and try the brakes - be careful!

If there is no difference then its the servo / vacuum. Good news is Servos are pretty bullit proof often as not its a pipe.
