well i have had the van for 2 weeks impressed so far until today taking the family and caravan off to anglesy for a weekend got as far as queensferry from liverpool. when a toilet stop was required . stopped at a garage, walking back to the car noticed a big wet patch under the van. Opened the bonnet A/T fluid everywhere somehow the A/T dip stick had popped half out its tube. pushed it back in called the RAC man they came out and i told them the story. When i pulled the A/T dipstick out it made a hiss sound. Next thing you know on the back of the wagon and back home any ideas would be good :sly

I don't know anything about Auto boxes, but your box has become pressurised.

Heat warms up the air in the box creating pressure.

Normally there is a vent on Manual gearboxes, diffs, and transfer box.

So I assume the Auto box vent is blocked..:nenau
If it has one, logic says it must....:thumb2

cheers

thanx guys so maybee it was to full of fluid what you reckon still got drive i had to back it into the drive oh the embaresment

check the level of atf, and the colour/smell of it urgently before you drive it any further , check while in drive ( handbrake on :doh ) and preferably someone in the drivers seat covering the foot brake just in case , do it when the engine is warm .... ie after 15 mins moving between park and drive

the auto box vents into the common vent for all the units, rear axle, transfer box, auto/manual box front diff, so at some point there is a blockage, you need to pull the pipes one by one and check them till you find the fault, Rick

atf

got to hold my hands up but when i first got it i checked the fluid straight after a long run down the motorway when i pulled the dipstick out fluid went everywhere. so i topped it up. wonder if i put to much in did check it and it seemed ok ish. :doh

interesting advice, you dont give any hint of what you want (or not) to detect via the smell

hmmm

love a good sniff of a box lol but it smelt ok hard to judge the colour cause it was all over the forecourt :nenau

what he is trying to indicate is a burnt oil smell = overheating of the transmission fluid it is normally reddish but after overheating goes brownish, the oil cooler on the auto is in the bottom of the rad, if other factors have come into play, blocked rad, thermostat fail or for whatever reason the rad is not doing its job then the auto oil cooler = naff = overheated auto oil= stuffed box, Rick

k

yeah thats what i didnt want to hear the old stuffed box coment. its still under warranty so its going back tomorow for a long hard talk with the dealer the atf on the dip was still redish dont know how much fluid was lost though.

I am only guessing from the comments on here, pleas do not accept it as fact, Rick

shame it took several posts to say "check for a smell of burnt/burning oil" !!!!!!

Never mind a 4x4 thread lets have a concise advice thread! :naughty

thats exactly what i was trying to say rick and trust me i know all about stuffed auto boxes lol

ATF

No one has mentioned how you check the oil level.
In park with the engine running.
There are two marks for the fluid level one when its hot & one when cold they are clearly marked.
Very easy to overfill if you think its like engine oil.
Too much ATF will damage the gearbox.
Most reliable is checking when engine is hot.
Hope you get it sorted OK.
